Zane 750 owners - please read

Dear Zane-Owners,

is there any interest for a better mapping of the 750 zane engines? I am talking to a well known manufacturer of ignition systems for the Breganze tripples, who just developed an injection unit for Ducati's and would be willing to develop something for Zane-users, too. As the solution involves a change to the wiring (basically an exchange of the existing one for higher reliability...), the solution is a) not cheap and b) will only be done at his place in Germany for the first 10 - 20 units. This would allow BeNeLux, French, GB, and other "relatively near-by" customers to bring it to their workshop, but would not involve oversea shipment right from the start.

The results with the Ducati are amazing and the product is already in use on the racetrack as well as on the road. However, setting up such a unit for the Zanes involves another extensive testing phase and therefore I would like to ask for your feedback if there is any interest in such a solution and what it would be worth to you. Please consider costs similar to the DMC plus a premium for new wiring, 2 Lambda sensors and some other points. It will NOT be a straight replacement, as a) the original wiring is crap and b) the connector of the original WM16 is not freely available, so the price will be for sure more in the Range of 1.000? +/-100?.

Features will be:

-Lambda controlled closed loop
-better mapping in all areas with removal of the issue around 2.700 - 3.000
-better fuel-consumption
-some minor other points

so - any interest in such a solution, preferably from those who would be willing to bring the bike to Germany for installation?

Hi Lothar,

I am *not* interested I'm afraid. The price is little less than what my Formula is worth and I there will be all sorts of things wrong with it before I need to fix the ignition! I will probably throw it away before I need that.

I'm sure a lambda controlled closed loop would be truly excellent, but have no idea why...
I don't have an issue around 2.700 - 3.000: I ride above those revs...
I don't have a problem with the fuel consumption: when I do, I'll be buying a smaller bike...

I suspect that this would only be of interest to someone who intends to race their bike.

My two cents worth, sorry! (dunno)  :'(

My two cents:
After a couple of years tuning ducatis with varios ECU:s ( Marelli P8, 1.6 (WM16), 1.5, 5.9 5.AM, MY ecu, Nemesis ) I would suggest a propper mapping of the 1.6 unit.
There would be People around who have the definitions for the map and knoew how tu use tuner pro and an e-prom programer.
Closed lope is usually the first thing to get rid of on a oem ecu.

Hi Lothar,
There is a chap in Aus who swaps out the WM16 for a remapped and PC programmable version: one of my firends here has kitted out two guzzi's with them - takes a little time on initial seat of the pants dyno work but at the end of the day works a treat - best sounding performance i've seen on Centuro's.

Cheers

Peter

ultimap chip works a treat on the s with open termis

When you ready to throw away Dick let us know

Im with Dick on the rpm thing, the only time its there is at take off, which im sure was taken into consideration when the mapping was done considering it is a high revving sports bike

Fuel consumption is same as a breganze triple

for my money, Id be going down tthe power commander route or using Jefferries in australia

Agreed the wiring is shit,  and 1k eu isnt really that bad if it involves wiring, ecu etc, but for me to be interested itd have to be a kit, shipping sucks ass

plus i got a guy in brisbane that has a dyno and is happy to do free shit for laverdas, racebikes that is, no its not Red

Hi Peter,

I know the MyECU from Jefferies, I have one installed on my Formula currently. As you said, the "getting started" is just PITA. If you are a native english speaking person with tons of experience in setting up FI systems, this is for sure one of the easiest to set up. However, if you are not, you are simply lost as I am. Friend of mine did a lot of programming for the Zanes (mainly the 668 though), but even he gave up after 6 months of trying, that's why I was looking into other options.

It wonders me that you don't experience this "chuckchucka" around that rev-range when accelerating, my bike shows it significantly. More when cold, less when warmed up, but its there and to be honest, Guzzis and Ducs that use the same FI computers do have the same issue and only get rid of it by aftermarket chips.

The problem though that we found out is that ignition timing is constantly changing one tooth during that rev range, which from my perspective is the reason why this happens. Not sure how to solve that but should be in the ignition map, right? but if not, then it sits inside the software and that is hard to fix...

I don't even experience something like that - maybe I slip the clutch or something so it doesn't bog down, though I don't think so. I'll be looking out for it now!

I must be easily pleased. When I had my Formula 750 I thought it was the dog's bollocks! The fuelling was good, it was lovely to ride and plenty quick enough. The only thing I noticed was that it was a bit high geared for town use, irrelevant when you're out on the open road. Wish I still had it...

BTW: I just talked to Uwe again about the possibility of an "easy install option" and he said that he would also consider a solution that is a plug-and-play one (if you ignore the fact that it still involves the welding of a lambda sensor bung into the header pipes and some cables for that sensor, but else everything would be connected to a AMP connector that directly attaches to the original plug for the computer).

If that drives more business, he would go for it. 10 is a minimum quantity, if we find more than 50 being interested, he could do even the unit with the connector built in like the original computer.

I posted it here, on Yahoo and on the German forum and meanwhile have some that would be interested, but not yet enough to get it going. So - anyone that would be interested, please send me a mail or PN, please.

Thanks

Lothar

Just got my Zane 750 formula. Fueling is not great, but this is not a bike designed to pull from low revs. I have a kawasaki twin for that. Sometimes it is just best to accept that all the niggles and foibles constitute 'character'. Otherwise it would be cheaper all round to buy a second hand Honda (can I state this on a Laverda forum?).
I think I like the Formula the way it is because I have to concentrate and ride it properly at the correct revs and in the correct gear at all times. The bike is more challenging to ride well than the Japanese equivalent and it is more fun for that reason. I'm not sure of the value in spending a large sum of money to try to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Better to accept that the Zane bikes are sometimes awkward. Regards Cooky : ???

If you have to spend money on a Zane, then it would be better spent on grafting a decent motor into the good chassis, (TDM 850?)
Lets face it, the Zane 750 lump is a pile of shit, poorly engineered/manufactured, et-al. Why pour ?2500.00 plus into them, (on the high side of their market value anyway and that is for a perfect example!) when you can get a comparable piece of modern kit for less?
Having owned one for a while now, I regret wasting the money on a pile of crap that i will probably end up getting shot of for peanuts!
A Laverda?  no, not really, they finished with the demise of the Breganze concern.
:(

As much as I respect your personal view, this thread is not about discussing if the Zane is a good bike or not, it is about a replacement for the WM16 Computer, please. Thanks  ;)

If you want to tweak your fuelling I can recommend a power commander.  These are readily available; the Ducati 998 model has the right connectors - then get on the dyno.

As a 668 owner I must say I don't think there is much to gain on this model (if you already have the mark 2 chip) but you can have lots of fun twiddling if thats what you like doing.

Funny thing is that if this was the 80s or earlier these bikes would be snapped up by people intent on swapping engines and the like. When I was younger I often swapped engines in cars when they broke (or I bought them broke with the intention of fixing up), and my brit bikes needed work every time I kicked them over. Either way they were worth much more when fixed up making it worth the effort.

Unfortunately (did I really mean that) bikes and cars are so cheap (and good) on the used market today that you can just move on to the next thing in the small ads (in the mid 80s ?500 would buy you a slightly rusty Mk1 1.3 Escort, an old Mini or a mid 70s Datsun Cherry whereas today ?500 would buy any of these cool things (and ?500 today is obviously much less in real terms):

Just think what ?1k would buy  :)
