Zane motor question

I have recently heard of a Zane for sale with a bad crank. I don't as yet know what year or model it is. From the description it sounds like it may be a 750s. The motor has not been disassembled yet so seeing whats bad is impossible. As the bike is 60 miles away, before I waste my time, the questions are:

What goes wrong with the cranks?

Do all model Zane's have the problem?

Is it fixable and are parts available?

When the crank goes, does it take any other parts with it?

If I can fix it will it last or is the motor a poor design and it will happen again.

Estimate as to parts cost to fix?

Thanks.

Bruce dont you come on the forum very often.

Wait for piss takes.

I am storing a Zane for a guy in OZ and intend to use it, see thread"at least its a Laverda".
Apparently they are well known for dumping engine parts down the road but at least the crank
on the one I have has been done.

They do vibrate and have a tendency to chew batteries.

From what I have seen on here it will not be a cheap fix.

Bruce,

1. The crank is basically poorly built, as opposed to poorly designed or over-stressed.  Ex-factory there is too much clearance in the big-end and the crank pins are not exactly round...

2. Yes, all Zane bikes suffer, the later the production date, the poorer the crank.

3. Yes, it is fixable, the earlier the better.  Less damage means less cost.  Parts are available from OCT but are not sold seperately.  You will need to send the crank in for repair.

4.  If the rumbling is ignored, the big-end lets go big time, throwing shrapnel up the bores and taking the pistons with them!

5. At least the crank will not throw up any further issues... lots of others in that can of worms.

5. Cost depends on extent of damage.  If crank webs and rods can be re-used, ie, nothing really yet broken, the crank overhaul amounts to about ?1500-1800.. I think.  Call Dirk at OCT for a quote.

OK Piet,

So were looking at ?1800 to fix crank and probably another ?200 for shipping to OCT and miscellaneous parts. That's $2600 US. And I have to hope nothing else is messed up in motor.

So unless the bike is in really nice condition and cheap, it's not worth it.

Also, are Zane's considered as gay as a 120?

Without wishing to sound cruel to the Zane fans....  most folks break 'em for the high quality chassis parts ....

( still want a fully faired silver 750S though...)

Hi Bruce,

there are only a few that have the crank fix already, mostly in Germany I think, as OCT is one of 3 companies I know that made the cranks work, 2 of which are in Germany. So - you might be better of looking for a complete bike with the crank (and some other points...) fixed in Germany and get it shipped over to you, if the registration/import is possible/not to big of a hassle.

I am fortunate to own a 2000 Formula (5 spoke wheels - one of the last 50 Formulas built), which got the crank overhaul right before I bought it with roughly 10.000Km. It was first registered on the importer Stein-Dinse and was the test bike used for all journalist test-rides in 2000 (several pics of the bike with the Stein-Dinse Sticker on the fairing in different magazines. Sticker is still on the bike). It is great fun to ride, but at that time, with the crank fix and everything else, it cost me 6.500? (5-6 years ago). Be prepared to put maybe 2.000? less on the table for a 750 S with the crank repair, but that is what you would have to plan for a good one. Formulas, as said, typically 2.000? higher.

There are some nice ones on www.mobile.de http://suchen.mobile.de/motorrad/laverda.html?scopeId=MB&isSearchRequest=true&sortOption.sortBy=price.consumerGrossEuro&makeModelVariant1.makeId=15000
