A question for Piet , I can,t rotate the crank cos it has give up which means I cant get the joint for the cam chain to the top to split it . Is it possible to split the crankcases with the barrel and head on so I could possibly see why it won,t turn as I would prefer not to cut the cam chain. Also is it possible to remove the balance shaft before splitting the motor so I can see inside to see what the problem is .

Problem is you can only remove the lower case if the balancer shaft is in a certain position.  If it isn't, you will need to remove the drive gear and the bob weight first, and I am not quite sure if that is possible with the shaft in situ.

Even if you get the cases apart, you may still not be able to reach the split link.  Lots easier to grab the bolt cutter and sacrifice the chain... not going make that much difference in the end. ::)

Can you at least rock the crank a bit?  At a guess, a big end has gone big-time, which means lots of shrapnel has been tossed up into the cylinder, taking out the liner and piston as well.  May well be the piston is seized tight in the cylinder, in which case, the cam chain is definitely one of your very minor worries.  Main bearings seldom surrender, but nothing surprises me on these things any more.

You can only remove the weight and gear, shaft stays put.

No way you can see what's going on inside without splitting the cases... unless you bash a bloody big hole in the side!
