RGS Air Filter

Hello,

I've been looking to replace my RGS air filter.  Found via some excellent support from our local motor factor that the following are the correct profile; Bosch S 0354, Mann C3459, Mahle LX3245 Purflex A1779.  All are to long but, with a little work with a sharp blade and a little glue a new filter can be fashioned .

Regards,
Kim.

OCT, Roger told me the originals are sold out but they have others- let me say typ K&N but same shape as original.
They can be cleaned and used again.
You may ask OCT.

Agreed.
I've done that many times. Air filter from a Mk.2 Ford Escort RS2000 was the choice back in the day - more recently Fiat Grande Punto 1.2, part number MD-8184 or EAF587.
For the Ford filter, cut one end off, shorten the remaining filter by the required amount, then stick the end back on, sealing the paper joint with a smear of silicon. I haven't got details to hand for the Fiat filter whether it's a direct fit or needs some adjustment.

Alan :)

I have one new filter and one used - but very serviceable - still on the shelf after my RGA Jota went to a new home. If memory serves, they are both UNI filters.
Do I have unimagined wealth here?  lol

I cut the paper from mine and glued a foam filter in place.

an update - a Fiat Punto 1.1 petrol engine air filter has two of the right dimensions 49mm x 90mm but the length is short by 30mm - however not that difficult to cut and make a join by using two - this will fit a Zane 750 as well - the uber filter is a Champion U305 if you can get one which has a metal support as well - this will go unaltered into both 2021-08-27 17.02.35.jpg 2021-08-31 16.00.56.jpg

I have a Champion U305 in my SFC 1000 but couldn't locate another as a replacement so I have sourced a bosch one same width, slightly deeper but much longer so the plan when it arrives is to cut a piece out of the middle and then glue/silicone back together.
will let you know how it goes

I recently used a MANN C3665 sourced easily in Oz from Burson's Auto Parts which is a pretty major chain. I think the original fitment was Ford Capri or something.

It's the correct width and height but about 75mm too long. I cut it about 50mm from one end, lopped out a suitable amount from the long side and sort of folded one pleat over the other at the join so there's no gap. Works a charm.

Some years ago, one of our fellow enthusiasts in Australia had a lot of reusable foam filters made for the RGS/RGA (that would also fit Zane' 750 models).

Is that kind citizen still part of our community, ready to admit it and facilitate getting another batch made?

I plead guilty to sourcing these foam filters and should see if the company still has the specs for these filters.
I guess we need to have some idea of quantities required.

I can add a bit of precision to that ... :)

1. 354 x 94 x 49 against the original UFI at 270 x 93 x 48mm.

2. Original fit for:
  • Ford Escort MK II 2.0 RS (1973 - 1981) 73kW
  • Ford Escort MK II 2.0 RS (1973 - 1981) 80kW
  • Ford Capri Coupe 1600 (1968 - 1974) 65kW
  • Ford Capri MK II 1.6 (1974 - 1977) 65kW

I had Unifilter (Australia) make filters for 180 triples, late 750 twins +GTL and prototypes for the early (under battery) twins as well
they were not very popular with a lot of people saying they strangled the motor, my dyno runs didnt show that! and I still wash and re-use the ones that I have, the early 750 filter needed the expanded metal centre from the original, in order to reload a new foam filter.
They must still have the specs, but I fell out badly with the UK importer, Slaters took it over from me and they also fell foul of the same problem and stopped as well

MANN C2859 "made in Germany" version can be just put in place. At least this worked in a couple of bikes. I don't know how much the dimensios of the air filter cases may differ.

The "made in Bosnia and Herzegovina" version is too thick on the rails, don't know if the soft sealing frame material can be removed some way, grinding the material off about 1mm on the upper surface somehow should make it a perfect fit according to my measurements. At the moment I have 5 of these on hands by now.
Any ideas?

The C2859 have an extra filter sheet, that can be either helped in to the air filter case with screw driver or another tool or taken off.

In my experience, the original UFI paper filters don't last longer than around 10 000 kms. It is actually choking after this and limiting performance, no matter the bike still works. And yes, cleaned with compessed air after every 4000 kms according to the manual, and some silicon oil can be used on the rails to make it not to stick hard.

I’ve used an air filter listed for a Fiat Punto 1.2, no need to modify to fit in the air box. Equivalent is also MANN C2859.
The only differences to be aware of is the added foam strip on top of the cassette, which can be removed but it doesn't seem to make any difference and the rubber moulding is slightly thicker which makes it a tight fit in the air box but I use silicone lubricant on the rubber moulding overcomes this. It may be other manufacturers have different thicknesses in the rubber moulding as Jouni’s observation. Cost around £5.

Bosch filter arrived today so cut it down to fit then used silicon seal and a couple of metal pins made from a large paper clip to secure the two sections together. I don't know if the RGS and SFC1000 share the same air box but the Bosch S3337 fits snuggly in the SFC1000 air box. I cut it down so that I needed to fix a 30mm (in length) end piece and then after the silicon had gone off installed with the attached end to the outside, I did this incase the attached short end came away on removal I would be able to easily extract the rest.
The S3337 is a more snug fit in the air box sliders that the champion U305 that was in previously but didn't need any silicon grease or similar to get it in/out.

I have been exploring K&N replacements and the nearest in dimensions I have found is the 33-2986 but looking at the pictures I don't think it would fully fit the air box leaving a gap between the in take and the carbs.

Any one had experience of finding/using a K&N filter?

Bob

Will work just as well.As long as the 2 sections fill the air box and with no gap between the the 2 parts all the air being sucked into the dellortos will have been filtered and the airflow will be uniform.

I used two Fiat Punto ones for my Corsa - I like the pins idea - I just pushed them tightly together held in by the cover
Cut and joined 2 Fiat Punto 1.1 air filters together with super glue. Bought 3 and made 2 filters for £16. Fitted nice and snug.
