oil funnel

Sick and tired of wobbly, hard to reach funnels that quickly overflowed and dripped surplus oil all over the cases, I searched high and low for a suitable alternative. I finally gave up and made my own, fired up the 3D printer and I got what I wanted...

As I nicked the design online from Thingiverse (search for "skewed funnel) and my CAD abilities are not very far-reaching, the spout turned out a bit too big for the dip stick aperture, so I knocked up an adapter that is screwed into the crankcase and will also hold the funnel firmly in place. Both items made from PLA at 0.15mm layer thickness, so it'll keep the printer busy for a day. I can supply the link to the funnel and .stp file for the adapter if anybody is interested.

I didn't really need it for the 3C as it has the SFC gear selector cover, but the cramped space above the RGS dipstick make filling a Pita. Will probably work OK on SF1> due to the upward angle of the carbs, but VHBs will probably block the funnel, so I'll need a work-around for that.

The angle of the funnel is actually quite a bit further upright than it seems in the pic, teetering on my wonky knees when I photographed it.

Let's have a Funnel off. This stuff makes me smile, I use one of those flexible metal ones at home and years ago had a great little one I used on trips but it's long disappeared so I am hoping this will work on the Atlas and be easy to carry. Seen and have myself cut up plastic drink bottles to use on trips and I am not talking Bongs and that's a great pain in the arse to not make a huge mess.

Nice piece of kit, Piet! I've been using a funnel for transmission fluid for the past 30+ years, fits perfect into the oil filler opening.

I've used something like that too, but it was too flexible Gerald.

Thought I had it sorted, but just a moment of inattention and the fucker tips over and I start scrambling for rags... fed up.

Very useful for having a pee by the side of the road.
The silicone model fits in the pocket. The ladies love them, saves taking the trousers down.

Looks like you are onto something Paul.

Flexible metal funnels also available from mxstore I notice.

I made this funnel extension from a piece of common old reinforced garden hose, back in 1979 ish. Been using it for every
oil change on the Jota ever since. The SF2 gets it's oil poured through this too. Not rocket science. :ROFLMAO:

My issue was when my 3c used a lot of oil on multiday rides carrying a funnel that was small enough to pack but big enough to work. I forget who but someone was cutting up a drink bottle on a recent ride.

I like it.
Anybody can come up with an ad-hoc “she’ll be right” solution that works well once every few months, but it takes a tradesman who does it every day to come up with a professional special tool that works as expected, every time, without fail.
Put the file on the forum Piet, and I’ll order one from Sideshow 🤣

I use this funnel for years and yes, I've also had the experience of it buckling away when the oil level in the funnel adds weight. I always use a fun construction of tension bands between the 3c and a camping chair to hold it in place. In addition to the weight from the oil which has to be taken in account, also the lower fixation is important - it must not slip out of the filling hole at the bottom.

Well, I get along with it, at least it's orange ...

On the 120°, I use a funnel from the kitchen. Got a set of 5 in different sizes, one just fits between back of cylinder and the frame. Wouldn't fit with an airbox on though, I can see why Piet was looking for a "one fits all" solution therefore, as for daily use, you don't want to use 5 different solutions... ;-)

@Jo : have the same as yours but found it tough to handle it with a 5 Liter can in one hand and holding the funnel with the other one. might be the one you use is less flexible, but mine - at least with oil in it - tended to bend so the oil ran out...

I like Piet's solution but think if someone could change the funnel part a bit so the top is horizontal and maybe one or two supports can be added so it "sits" not only in the filler hole but also is supported by the struts sitting on the engine housing or the primary cover (with two rubber feets), that would be ideal... hope Jo does not laugh about my missing paintshop skills, but something this way...:

Lothar,

My design does not require any additional support. The fit of the spout in the adapter is quite snug, the printed plastic surprisingly strong. A full funnels' worth of oil is no problem, leaving both hands free to handle oil bottles and a fag or beer can at the same time. ;)

If I were to modify it, I'd try to enlargen the funnel to be able to dump the entire 3 litres at once and perhaps incorporate a venting facility. Flow rate is determined by the crankcase opening, so flow time will be much the same if filling slowly or fast. Dumping all the oil at once gives you a chance to take an extra swig or two from your can without worrying about spillage.

Time will tell if it is durable enough to hold up to daily rigours, but it seems to be more than adequate at the moment, and a huge improvement over my previous bodges. As I stated in my opening post, the funnel is almost vertical, the photo is taken at an angle.
