ARA Meeting 27 June 2021

Both a record breaking and bike crashfest meeting at Jurby this weekend.
I had entered my 650 Formula, resplendant in a new (multi) colour scheme having sold the bodywork previously used, in the singles, twins and triples race (as the 750 is still not wanting to play) and one of my F500/Monty's in the Classic race (running to Classic TT rules).
Unfortunately the 500 wasn't allowed out to play as the officials rejected my oil catch tray as 'inadequate' although it has been accepted at other clubs. As I plan to retire the 650, for future events I will see if I can fit the belly pan off that bike, otherwise I will have to modify my F500 full fairing to suit.
The meeting was running the races the 'normal' way, i.e. anti clockwise, which although I tend to find less demanding than clockwise, my lap times are not dissimilar. Not unexpectedly I qualified near the back of the grid, but at least not last.
The first race was fairly uneventful and I managed to keep the two fast chargers at the front at bay for a bit longer than the previous meeting, but they still caught me with more than a lap to go.
I was a bit more determined to try and do better in the second race and actually managed to make up up three places in the charge into the first corner, but soon got passed again. For a while I could just about hang on to the tail of a guy on an 848 Ducati, but he slowly pulled away a bit further each time down the back straight until I lost the tow. My next target was not to get lapped but the bastards got me just on the line. However, I gather on my second lap I put in a PB lap time, and I didn't crash (like many others) or blew up so not a complete failure of a weekend.

Well done, Andy. I see plenty of catch trays here way under spec. It is pretty uncommon for a crankcase to dump oil anyway, it is invariably a hose adrift.

I agree. One of the biggest crash fests I was involved in was back in the ‘80s at the start of a BOTT race at Donington Park. Some knob had been ‘making adjustments’ to his bike prior to the start of the race and forgot to do up the oil lines. Of course he gives it a big handful away from the line and the hose pops off, liberally coating the track all the way down to Redgate. I was one of about half a dozen riders brought down on his oil slick. I was pretty lucky to walk away unharmed as I had tyre marks up the back of my leathers from where a rider behind me had practically run me over.

is the any Jurby action coming up the last week of july or the first of August, or for that matter any road racing eg Southern 100?, lazy to not check on line I know, but you will have it in your head

No racing during S100 ‘race week’. There is a meeting at Jurby on 18 July but I hope to be racing at pembury the next w/e so not sure if I will be at Jurby. The following meeting is 15 August.

Came across a couple of photos taken at the w/e. I also had a look at my results and over the two races - virtually the same speed and time for both...

Had a pre-meeting assessment of the 500 yesterday by the chief scrutineer and he’s now sort of happy with the bike now I have fitted the belly pan off the 650. Hopefully, no other issues will arise before Sunday, and it will start okay....
Interesting to see Ian is still able to run his 500 oil catch pan free in Oz...
