Made this a general thread title as there are going to be a few questions.

Have now split the cases with a view to getting everything cleaned up and checked - Green book indicates the cranks should just lift out but having no joy - does anyone have suggestions on removal?

Found this in the sump - looks familiar but not sure:

Avoid walloping the ends of the crank. They're assembled with a press and aligning them is a delicate operation. They can easily be misaligned. Grasp the crank ends and lever with your thumbs against the crankcase. The outer bearings can become a bit stuck in the lower case.
Your bit of metal reminds me of a gearbox washer.

Agree Paul. Looks like a piece of one of the splined gearbox shaft spacers.

I give the crank a gentle wedgie with a suitable piece of wood between crank end and case. You'll generally find they release pretty easily.

Still having no joy getting the crank out - don't want to get too rough with it.

Yes - that looks like a gearbox spacer - can see where it came from - will have to see if I can find the rest of it.

It's possible that the outer mains have turned in the case. Could make the crank a bit harder to take out.

Have located where the the geabox spacer came from:

The circlip is bent and that gear (4th?) is loose on its bushing - I presume this is not expected - though the busing looks OK.

Anybody know what the expected ID of that gear/busing should be so I can figure out if I can get away with just replacing the bushing?

Thanks

The measurements you require are in the manual I think. They're probably in the forum library.

How do you identify a GT crank vs an SF crank? Just that the crank out of my SF is so heavy I cannot imagine what the GT crank weighs - just want to check it has not been changed over at some point.

Thanks - not such a huge difference - was just a bit shocked at the weight of the crank when I pulled it out. Looks like the bike suffered a snapped cam chain at some point so just checking everything while it is part.
