Lucas turn signal problems

I know the purists don't believe in turn signals, but I've mounted these rear Lucas turn signals to the black and green wires as shown.

With the black wire connected to the left turn signal and the left indicator switched on, the left flasher just stays on with no flashing. When the right indicator switch is turned on, there's no light and just chirping from the Lucas relay.

With the wires reversed and black wire connected to the right turn signal and the right indicator turned on, there's no light and only relay clicking. If the left indicator switch is turned on, the right turn signal turns with no flashing.

The wires will be properly routed once things are working.

So is it a defective flasher relay, or do the front turn signals also need to be mounted ? (but there are separate green and black wires running to the front of the bike).

To get the Lucas relay working, you need to connect both indicators on each side. Light on and no flashing indicates not enough load for the flasher to start clicking. No light and chirping is a different problem, check your bulbs and grounds. You also need to use 21W bulbs all round.

The Lucas flasher is true stone-age equipment, it has been in use since the Morris Mini was introduced. Not necessarily bad, but they do give up eventually. Lots of better alternatives out there. Modern solid state units offer reliable flashing independant of bulb wattage and current supply.

I was hoping that the rear flashers would work as a test before buying the front set. I'll check the bulbs but I'm assuming they're the proper wattage. I have a replacement EMGO flasher unit that I'll also try.

They definitely won't flash unless the load is correct ie two 21watt bulbs with a conventional relay ...

Can't you connect the two together you have to check before getting the other two.

Better options, solid state for one, how much trouble do you need to witness before a rectify once and for all, is simple to instal. Free advice never asked for. BTW reads that perhaps you have a shorted feed wire to frame, need attention prior to SS blinker can j.

Definitely believe in turn signals, but would never try and use an old Lucas flasher relay - SO many excellent alternatives out there for so little money.

I’m no purist, but if the bike didn’t come from the factory with them, think 750SFC, I wouldn’t retrofit the bloody things.

Unfortunately, in this day and age there are too many numb nut drivers that would think you were waving at them if you held your hand out to signal that you’re turning.

But a bike without blinkers looks so tidy IMHO, and are just something else to stop working and bugger up your day.

There are also tons of innocuous little blinkers available now that don't make such a difference to the appearance of the bike but let people know what you are up to.

Yep.

Quite surprised at how effective they actually are! Very visible, even in bright sunlight. LED tech has advanced considerably.

The little black dot at the lower rear of the seat is an indictor - very bright Motogadget. I'd have them on the fairing but the Kwaka ones don't get in the way (removed for track day in the pic).
