Hi guys, any ideas about replacing starter motor in a Jota. Is it unique unit to Laverda or is there an alternative..?
Mate in Oz has a really failed unit, not able to rewind or repair, so we need to come up with a solution..
Thanks
Ian

SJCE 102LB 12v 400w Starter Motor is available at least from Bluetraction Engineering, Netherland. Item code: 46 50124, price: 205 ? + 19% VAT. Shipping costs: no clue.

The one from Bluetraction Engineering is sold without the gear. The motor itself will replace the original Bosch Starter Motor. Usually the old gear is still usable?

disgaree with you there Grant,

SJCE and Bosch units will interchange, you dont get the bendix on the SJCE, but you dont need it anyway.

I have done it, and it worked.

ps unless I am realy going senile?

Hmmm, I put an SJCE on POP and had to buy a different gear to make it fit the 180 starter clutch gear.
So, who's right?
The guy who told me this was Van Dijk.

Yeah Ian, you probably should have qualified the request with its Cam, he's done a million miles (FAST) and he's not adverse to gaff tape and fencing wire as a long term solution (says the guy that had his Jota hot wired for 6yrs) so the 200 quid solution for Sunday maybeeeeee a tad OTT  :D

Grant,

There are several different gears available for the SJCE motors, the one used in the 120s fits the 180s nicely.  There's one in my 3C and the original Bosch is now in the RGS... straight swap! :D

Just to confuse things a bit more - I did sell a load of SJCE s/motors a few years ago to a lot of the dealers worldwide - these were originally intended for Guzzi engines to be used in military drones - they had the spiral cut in the shaft and took the Bosch bendix cog - would not take the Laverda cog that was fitted to original SJCE s/motor for Laverda Rg series - think Zane 650 used this also - regards - Phil

Grant the SJCE starter that i used on TOG was unbolted from an RGS and straight onto TOG (a 180), I have no idea if it was one of Toddysl military jobbies, but you get the npoint, if I recall correctly there was no bendix on the SJCE, I cant check because I no longer own it, so....

is it normal on an RGS for their to be no bendix on the starter motor and just rely on the sprag clutch?

Yes, Clem.

The freewheel is not in motion once the engine's running, so no need at all for further complications...

Hello everyone.
I know this thread is quite old, but does anyone know where I can get a replacement starter motor for a 1982 Jota120 please?
I’ve just replaced the Starter clutch rollers, springs and plungers and now my starter motor has packed up. I’ve dismantled it and pieces of armature windings have dropped out, which is not good, so a decent reconditioned unit is needed if there is one about. I see the price at Motalia is over £500. Any other retailers recommended please?
I’ve looked at Blue traction in Netherlands which lists 5 for Laverda. Anyone any experience of this company please?

google the starter bay in Gloucester they have rebuilt two for me . Hoping to get a third one done that has been sat in the garage

Paul Marx had a Bluemotion starter and got well and truly stuffed, cost him lots and got trouble plus no refund, he is very sore about that and this is probably why he doesnt reply to the thread.

The motor is excellent, it's the drive that's wanting.
I used 75124, 600 Watts, plenty powerful only the gear is pinned on, the pin shears very rapidly as in third start and then the gears don't line up and grind themselves to eternity.
Others have used the 400 W motors with success.
And yes, Blue Motion never did follow up my complaint.

Another company to try is Robson & Francis - last time around £190 to recondition mine which had a short on the stator winding. Armature rewind is a pretty straightforward task for any decent motor repair company.

What sort of price Terry?
It depends what they have to do, each time i have dealt with them i use their out of hours drop off box and get a phone call to let me know what needs doing and how much its going to cost. Talking to Adam (Sir Sid) yesterday i don't think he had a great experience with them, i can only go by my dealings with them
