Recommendations for a MC helmet for HOT weather?

I just did a 790 mile trip to Utah and back on the RGS. Went there at night which was nice and the return trip two days later in the early morning in to the afternoon where it was a cool 116 degrees F. The RGS ran perfectly other than I through the motor was going to melt. I have one of Andy Wagner's temperature gauge oil level sticks and it showed 134C or 273F. Bike is back home where it is a comfortable 85 degrees F. This is hopefully my last trip to settle my parents estate as they lived in Utah and are both gone now.

So no problems other than the helmet. I currently have a Shoei Multitec which they don't make anymore and it is hot! Even with the vents open my head is feeling no air coming in.

So what helmet have you found that actually keeps your head cool?

I would imagine those in Australia are familiar with hot temps?

The poor RGS below, it would like a beer but some for me first!

I have a Shoei Neotec 2 that I really like. They do a 3 now, but I dont think there is a huge difference between the 2 and the 3. In hot weather, it's ok. My only complaints are its chin vent tends to blow air directly into my eyes, and it's either fully open or closed; half open would be nice. The scalp vent directs air from your brow through your hair; if you have any, I dont notice its effect much. Mine is white; I did some googling, and white reflects heat away best, plus it's the cheapest. The other issue is I struggle pulling the visor on and off, its preety complcated to line its clips up. Another issue is mine requires a snug pull of the visor towards the right to get it to completely seal. Once you do that, it's fully leak-free, but in extreme conditions I have had it fog up even with its Pinlock fitted. That was at close to 0c and sleeting. I had to crack the visor to stop it fogging, but as I said, that was a completely nuts ride.
 
I wore a version of this on a scooter in Florida:

Built in tinted visor and snap in ear coverings for cooler weather. The brim is removable. It’s available here in Vietnam at 1/2 the price as in NA and I’m thinking of getting one again. I have the best domestic helmet, but it is not able to meet any western safety standard.

The locals ride in the 36/40 degree weather everyday, but they always are fully covered. Today I tried going into the city wearing long linen pants and a UV barrier jacket with thumb holes to hold the sleeves down and a hood that goes under my helmet to keep the sun off my neck. It also has a Nehru collar that I kept fully zipped. I was cooler than when I wear my normal gear of tee shirt, shorts and Teva style sandals.

Of course either of these riding clothes violate the All The Gear, All The Time rules I used to faithfully follow. But needs must….I had an EPS with ablation last week and one of my new meds will permanently turn my skin blue-grey with too much sun exposure.
 
Obviously an open face helmet will give you more ventilation but has the downside of less protection. Perhaps as a compromise you should consider a flip over helmet like the one from LS 2. You can ride it like an open face helmet when it gets hot and flip the chin guard down if it starts raining or you get fed up of picking the flies out between your teeth. 😉
 
The helmet I currently use has a flip down internal tinted sun visor ........ so I can ride at fairly moderate speeds with the main visor open , with the benefit of some extra wind flow , yet am still afforded eye protection due to the sun visor .

Anything over about 50 mph means closing down the main visor , so that`s that ...... but higher speeds mean more of a wind blast anyway ..... even if it is warm air ...... so I don`t find that so much of a problem .........

........ What I do find a problem is being stuck in stationary or slow moving traffic ........ that`s bloody murder at the moment , no matter which helmet or jacket I might choose to wear .


By the way , when it came to choosing a helmet to replace the Arai RX-7V I`d previously been using , instead of spending £600 -800 on a similar replacement , I thought I`d just spend just £22 instead .... ( reduced from £45 ) ...... on a Rocc Speed Pro ........

Comfy .... light as a feather ...... seat belt type buckle ..... internal sun visor so you can switch from clear to dark in a milli-second ........ and a main visor release system you can operate in two seconds .... ( one second per side ) ...... unlike the latest Arai offering where you have to set aside the best part of five minutes ........

So I`ve got a £22 head , as Bell Helmets adverts from the early `seventies would have it .......... but I`ll take the risk , and live dangerously ................


BTW ........ Talking about roasting in slow moving or stationary traffic ...... You would not believe what I have to put up with on my 20 mile trip from where I live to my garage in Bristol ......... Never ending road " improvements " ...... ( aka lane reductions .... roadworks ..... temporary lights ...... diversions ..... 30 mph limits ..... ) ......the shit show just goes on and on ............ Just to provide a cycle lane ( which no one will ever use ) on a main arterial route into Bristol .......... reducing two lanes on a busy main road down to one for much of the way ............

I`m so pissed off with it all , I may just make a video of my journey in and post it on here so you can all watch and suffer along with me .........

Spent 20 minutes at an unmanned roadwork traffic light at night, in the middle of BFN a couple of weeks ago. 😡

Sign said it was set at 7 minute intervals.

No traffic coming around the bend halfway through the works…… until ……my patients had expired and went through the red, which is when I met oncoming traffic coming the other way on said bend. 🙄

Tested my reversing in the dark with two trailers 😳




Speaking of hot riding, I near expired riding through Bordeaux France, in peak hour.

Pulled into a servo and poured bottled water down my throat and another all over myself.

A lovely French girl, who said she was a nurse, helped out by sitting me down in the shade and poured water over me.

“Heat exhaustion” she said with her sexy accent, then again …… she’d still have sounded sweet if she told me to ‘put the fucken rubbish bin out you lazy slob!’
 
The symptoms I experienced with heat exhaustion after working 3-- 15hr days in well over 44c even when drinking close to 10litres of water a day, included fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Did a blood test the day after, and I was down to 20% kidney function, and the Dr said if I hadn't pulled the plug and driven home, I was close to Heat Stroke, and that can cause you to need limbs amputated when your muscles melt down and dieing. I tried, as they say, soldiering on, typical stupid men's shit. I was in the position where I couldn't just stop, running a job that included 2 150-ton mobile cranes and 30 blokes. Scheduling critical work in insane weather events is crazy. And what happens 3 years later, the head case Architect pulls a similar stunt again without checking the weather; this time his stupid arse ends up in Hospital on a Drip. I go home at 9pm, driving past the concrete pump man Jackhammering set concrete out of the back of his Concrete Pump.
 
Years ago, I used to watch videos of people riding dirt bikes on the Lava banks and rainforests in Hawaii; they spent more time lifting and carrying the bikes than actually riding them, in intensely extreme terrain. Usually in intense tropical weather. They used Mountain Bike helmets; I'm very much doubtful that would be legal these days. What I wore dirtbiking in summer was a Danish summer pressure suit over a wide beater and a 3-litre Camelback with plenty of Ice blocks inside

Yes, that’s the one, as George W Bush said: “That’s some weird shit!” And Xeralto too. But both for only 90 days, and I get to quit my beta blocker. Are you a MD? Or cardio patient?

We are sun lovers we just see a dermatologist every six months for a full body scan. I miss not being able to go for a swim on a hot day here. The famous China Beach is only 3kms down the road…. Of course it has a different name today.
