Too many gadgets in new vehicles?

Very similar to the Kenady bloke flying to Martha's Vineyard in the USA. Way overconfident and also without an Instrument rating.

Yes, much the same in terms of overconfidence and pushing personal limits too hard. The difference in Hill's case was the remarkable number of rules that were willfully broken, virtually everything in relation to pilot licensing, the aircraft, the destination airport and the flight conditions, and the fact that this made his liability insurance invalid.

Hill actually did have an instrument rating but it was not current, so invalid for the flight.

I always liked Hill ....... still the only driver to win at Monaco , Indianapolis and Le Mans .......... and as an individual completely at odds with the personality bypass on legs who seem to compete in both two and four wheel sport nowadays .......

Maybe his attitude to flying went hand in hand with the mental attitude which prevailed in motor sport back at that time ....... the amount of risk taking necessary needed to win ........

Stewart later said about his friend Hill ...... " A very good , but not great driver ......... and not as good a pilot as he thought he was .... " ........

Cross between Dick Dastardly and James Bond. At Sports Personality of the Year , Hill fell on a champagne glass whilst dancing on a table and cut his leg really badly- he was stretchered off to rapturous applause. We need more sportsman like this now instead of the boring crop of numpties with no dress sense we have now.

There was an article I read recently about Aussie late `eighties / early ` nineties Kawasaki racer Rob Phillis ..........

It involved the Macau GP , and a bar called ( and run by ) a lady known as Mama .

Racers would gather at Mama`s for a pre- race / post- race / any time they fancied race " celebration " ............

Late into one evening , a well lubed Phillis was spotted strutting up and down on top of the bar to Madonna`s " Vogue " , wearing a pair of Mama`s knickers on his head ........

Mr Beast`s Graham Hill dancing on a table story reminded me of that .............

There is a photo somewhere of Hill sat in his Lotus 49 on the starting grid of a GP with his hand halfway up the leg ( thigh ) of the brolly-girl stood next to the car on the grid ........... Not very PC , but she didn`t seem to mind .............

Then of course there`s the old thing regarding Barry Sheene`s motorhome ........ " Don`t come knocking when the caravan`s rocking ...... " ..........

Another thing at the time was early era Freddie Spencer ....... who back then was accompanied by his girlfriend ( first name escapes me ) Jobert , a Louisiana ex beauty queen apparently ...........
The thing was , the relationship seemed to be entirely platonic , which caused a certain amount of concern / consternation amongst the GP paddock regulars , most of whom regarded anything with a pulse as fair game .........

The most contact between the two of them seemed to be that they held hands ......... which earned Ms Jobert the paddock nickname " Mummy " ....... although it seems she never went as far as wiping Freddie`s nose for him ..........

There was a Bike magazine take on Viz ........ this was ages ago , so the memory buds are being tested a little here ...........

If I remember there was " Black Belstaff " ..... a take on " Black Bob , The Dandy Wonder Dog " , who was a heroic sheepdog featured in the Dandy comic , who couldn`t help but come to the rescue of people in distress .........

" Black Belstaff " was an animated wax cotton jacket who performed similar courageous feats , such as pulling people out of peat bogs , or seeing children safely across the road ..........

Another was a take on Billy Fart Pants ......... but this was a motorcycle racer who was always gagging for a shit ....... especially so halfway through a race , which meant he always crossed the line first , so desperate was his need for a crap .........

" He`s Number One ...... but he`s always doing number two`s ..... " ..............
