Hi is this the correct replacement for an RGS? Tried reading threads and got frazzled

I have 400 Watt SJCE.jpgSJCE starters on a couple of my Laverdas, they work fine. Not sure if the 14 tooth pinion is the right one, try asking Piet.
It is a bit shorter than the old Bosch type, for which spares are almost impossible to find. The mounting holes etc. are correct, though.
Best paint it matt black, then no-one will notice.

It has the same part number as the one in my parts list
What's in a number? Only used for reference, doesn't always mean it actually fits/works, unfortunately. If mounting face mates up and rotation are correct, it would be nice to finally have an option. 50% extra power won't do any harm either.

14T pinion is correct for triples, Steve. SJCE and Bosch are straight swaps in triples.

The OR600/650/668 use the same SJCE starter but with a 15T pinion. 500 and Zane 750 have entirely different starters.

Spares for the Bosch are actually more common than for the SJCE... unobtanium comes to mind. Although structurally very similar, SJCE field and armature coils are wound in opposite directions to the Bosch, nothing apart from the brushes actually interchanges.

..... ever the one to provide useless background ( until come the day ) series compound starter motors only rotate the one direction even when the applied voltage is reversed. Permanent Magnet motors will reverse direction however.

Because the field winding is electromagnetic and the stator/armature also they both reverse their fields with reversed polarity and will only rotate in the same direction. Converted a T160 Trident to battery negative to frame, ditched the Zener. Lot of T160 prospects here will be glad of the news... come a day. j.

*** Bit tricked Piet, as i did mix and match SJCE and Bosch starter mechanical parts ( major and minor ) in the day, day long ago...

I once fitted NOS Bosch field coils to a SJCE. Everything fitted nicely but upon bench testing the bugger reversed rotation...

Closer inspection showed the field coils were wound in the opposite direction. Had to repair the insulation of the frayed originals and re-fitted those, all fine again!

Would I have gotten away with it by reversing the brushes Jon? Didn't think of that at the time.

My case ( pun?... yes am that pitiful ) more advanced than my mix and match Piet, did not swap bosch into SJCE field coils thank goodness. Had a few far flung armatures when starter clutch jammed, ho hum... in the main were basic casing, end caps et al.... which was a surprise to me.

Reads probable if you could initiate the +12 commutator connection 180 degrees form original connection arrangement, it should reverse one of the magnetic fields. Though being compound series connection, brushes stator plate to field electrical connection it would be a task of some measure. Did wonder how you knew the SJCE was opposite field than the Bosch, was news to me...

Have a niggling feeling that my memory is not reliable as such, then i cannot remember that i had a niggling feeling, so they cancel out... kind of magnetic field memory in play... grin. j

During an engine rebuild, Red sent my Starter to his starter rebuild bloke, and he found mine was a combination NOS Bosch and an SJCE. He told Red he had never seen another like it. I remember Eadie's back in the day had told me they had fitted a new starter motor; they had never said anything about mixing and matching parts. BTW, that's on a 3C.

I didn't know, I found out...

I think it's called FAFO these days. ;)
