1000 3C - what to look for?

Alternator-ignition combo - it will then charge the battery, allow you to run the headlight without flattening the battery and a modern ignition will transform the motor. Keith Nairn or Redax will set you straight. Many a happy customer on here.

Having the cam timing blue-printed as, from new, it could be somewhat less than ideal.
Phil Todd did mine many years ago, ca. '86, and it made a phenomenal improvement.

Check frame thoroughly for accident damage/cracks, especially in the headstock area.

Unless there is verifiable proof of recent primary chain/s replacement, fit new and do the clutch rubbers while you're in there.

What do I specifically need to look out for when looking to buy the above and what upgrades are worthwhile, thanks
Specific? Nothing.
Check that it's a 3C not a modded 3CL.
Remember that it's over half a century old and that a lot of things have happened during that time.
Look at 3Cs on the web.

Look for oil leaks in front of the cylinderhead. Early tripple heads crack in the 90dgr corner from the transmission tunnel.

The early heads are usually dodgy so check valve clearances and it would be good if the owner has a record of what size shims are fitted.
As Cyriel says they crack as well although mine never did.
Lovely bikes but almost anything could have happened to them over the years. I did nearly 100,000 miles on my 1974 bike and loved it.
You also have to be wary of cobbled together matching numbers bikes. I have recently seen one I bought accident damaged years ago and broke for spares, I'm certain the original engine is fitted to a different bike.
People on this forum can usually spot a wrong'un a mile away.
