Shorty in NZ was complaining that the tank on his 3CL fouled the carbs and somebody suggested that the underside of the early tanks had a shallower cutaway in way of the carb tops. So today I compared the two. See attached pics. The shallower indentation is on an early tank with the cap hinging forward. You learn something new every day  :D  By the way if anyone is looking for the early type tank I'm prepared to do a swop for the later one. The tank is in very good condition but needs painting.

Thanx very much for that 3PAT......most interestng.  I'll have to do a comparision on my two tanks now.  I might have a later or earlier tank fitted.

      Cheers Shorty NZ

I wonder if the earlier tanks had shallower cutaways because the carbs didn't come out so far with the early mounts (the ones where the stubs fitted inside the head). If that is so, then the shallow cutaway tanks will only fit very early 3cs (i.e. pre-1600 or 1700 engine number).

I'm running the early cylinder head of 1579 on my 3CL and have had an early front hinged 3C tank mounted and now my original 3CL with back hinged fuel cap. No problems clearing the carbs using the OEM rubber pods on the frame with either tank. The issue I had was that the right petcock stem would not clear the cover of the cylinder head using the early 3C tank and needed to be bent out a bit. Tanks were handmade and seem to differ a lot in dimensions!

Tom, I took those pictures with an old phone. The later tank is the original dark blue underneath but is useless to me because someone has cut the filler neck out.
The earlier tank has been resprayed metallic dark green on top but I never looked properly at the underside because I was in a rush. I'm going to dig it out again this week because I've been asked for some clearer photos and I'll take a look at the paint at the same time to see if there is any original colour left there.
Regards Pat

I am running 4mm spacers between the frame uprights and the rubber "Furrels/bungs"
but still have clearance issues.  The front tank rubber looks fine up by the steering head.
What I suspect now is that my "bungs" aren't the original ones  (possibly door stops).
Would be interested to know the length of a set of correct bungs?  I am not complaining
and this is not a big issue.....(might be tho if my carbs hole the tank""").  I do see tho  that this is not an uncommon problem.

        Cheers Shorty

This is the tank off my 1976 3CL, can clearly see where the carbs (and a couple of cables) have been wearing. I had tape in these areas but as can be seen this did little to stop it. Perhaps it will be avoided with the addition of the Miks

Actually looking at that photo again I'd say those wear marks are from the K&N filters rather than the carbs as they are way back from the top of the carbs. No engine in my frame so just postulating and comparing to photos of complete bikes.
