The front wheel spindle on my SFC was a mess when I got the bike.

Having bought a new spindle spacers etc it still does not seem to fit right. (not 1005 it is the right spindle - how do I tell?

Does anyone have photos of what it should look like or a full parts list / diagram as I have been told some of the diagram out there are wrong.

Photos attached of what it looks like at the moment. The speedo drive certainly looks wrong as against the fork leg and not lining up centrally.

Thanks

spindle should be pudhed in until it touches the speedo drive housing, so about 15 mm more then in the foto. usually the thicker part comes out of the inside of the right forl tube about 1-2 mm and the speedo housing will not touch the forl. Just the hole in the spindle should be visible to hold the spindle when the nut is fixed.
Spacer should be that long that both brake disks have the same position in the brake calipers and some gap to the fork

Knackered axles often are only a part of the problem. Using a hammer to fit the axle often causes bruises and burrs within the fork bores for the axle, sometimes damaging the speedo drive housing in the process.

I'd suggest removing the wheel to see if the new axle can be fully inserted into the fork legs without resorting to force. Same goes for the speedo drive and wheel bearings. If necessary, de-burr and smooth things out. The axle should be an easy, smooth sliding fit through all components.

When correctly fitted, the thick part of the axle bears against the steel insert of the speedo drive, goes through the wheel and spacer and locks the wheel assembly solidly to the LH fork slider. There should/must be a gap (sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the width of the LH spacer) resulting between speedo drive housing and RH slider. Do NOT insert washers or any such crap to fill up this space! When all is fitted properly, the RH pinch bolt can be tightened.

Try Piet's suggestions first to see if they throw up any issues.

Where did you buy the spindle from? Do you have the original to compare against? I'm just wondering if the supplier has cocked up on the dimensions. Checking the library parts list, it looks as though the SFC spindle is common to the RGS /RGA and Corsa variants (or at least there is no spindle shown with the SFC wheel!) If I'm correct, see photos of my RGS and earlier 1000 spindles

I have experienced a similar problem when axles are rechromed. The plater is often unaware that the diameter of the chromed section of the spindle is dimensionally critical and it gets over-plated with copper and then the spindle won’t go in or go fully home in the fork leg.

I always tell the chromer to keep away from those parts.
