120 and 180 starter motors

hey all -long time no post- i suspect my 83 RGS starter motor is kaput (new battery and starter solenoid and no joy). i have a spare starter motor from my 78 1200 in a box somewhere - can i use it? not opposed to getting the 120 rebuilt but would add further frustration after new battery/solinoid and to find its not the starter motor after replacing it too

so i scoured the past post and it looks like there is some debate on the gearing on the 120 vs 180 starter motors and their straight up interchangeability - has anyone actually tried a bosch with the gears that are standard on it from a 180 into a 120 bike that had the SJCE (?) starter with its gear pattern
inquiring minds want to know it is will f'up my 120 using it

Put Bosch 180 starters on 120 engines many times with no trouble whatsoever. As Rob on the above post also confirms.

Mike if you are using a Bosch starter and bending gear that came out of a 180 triple then it will work on the 120 motors. The SJCE can have different pinion gears when used for other models but this is not an issue in your case.
For what it’s worth my Jota 120 has a Bosch starter, I don’t think the SJCE starter was introduced until the RG series.
If you are still not confident, fit the Bosch starter, remove and earth the plugs and crank the motor a few times.

perfect this is exactly what i was hoping to hear (and in detail on the starter gearing!!)
