1200 Marzocchi fork distance piece

...hello again,

....just wanted to install the set of new progressive front fork springs(wirth) in my 1200 TS.
the springs got the right length(50 cm), the old ones had "shrunk"/sagged to 46 cm.....
trying to reassemble the fork with these new, "longer" springs installed is scary:
there is A LOT of pressure needed to get the thread of the top cap engaged....
dismanteling the fork leg from above You`ll find a piece of metal tube serving as a distance piece above the spring.
if I remember right, someone told me there are different versions/dimensions/lengths of these tubes/distance pieces.

anybody out there who knows/could tell me the original length of tis distance piece?

Yes it takes a bit of effort, very easy to wreck the first turn of thread if you’re not careful. Need to keep constant pressure to keep the spring in and cap straight, while gently feeling for the thread, the combination of brute force plus fingertip feel takes practice! Try it with the previous spacers in and check your sag, chances are it’ll be about right with your new springs.

but:
sag with the bike put on the ground (w/o center stand....) is a bit less than 1 cm....and the weight of the driver on the bike doesn`t change much :(

let`s get precise:
-- the length of the springs that were installed is 46cm.
-- the length of the new ones s 50 cm
-- the length of the (original ?)preload spacer tube is 7cm....

what`s surprising:
the installation sheet of the supplier(i.e. wirth) tells me:
"the original spacers are to be left out..."

I tried this, but without any spacers the sag, the bike taken off the central stand, is some 4 cms....
so that`s not the way to go.

What figure of Sag are you chasing?
 
The usual sag with a rider is 1/3 of travel so that's approx 30 to 35mm on your typical 120mm of travel on Laverdas. A good spacer material that can be cut easily is PVC pipe with a thick wall 3 or 4 mm topped with hardened washers on both ends. Race Tech recommend 10mm of spring preload but that includes the fork cap itself. Sneak up on these figures but if you go too far cutting that pipe add washers till it's right. I found that 10mm too short so I have 5 washers added to mine. I use a socket extension and socket with both hands to get the cap on, it's bloody scary so don't F that thread up. Add a cable tie to the fork and let us know how much travel it uses and how it feels. I won't get into straight-rate versus multi-rate springs, Plenty use both with results they're happy with.
 
I have found in the past , by using a 'step ladder' , which allows you to get above and on top to apply the pressure to the cap in a more even and controlled way. Make sure the bike can not full off the centre stand!
