I'' ve never used a Nyloc nut on a manifold, the example was used re their tightening ability.
 
I got talking to one of the scooter racing lads at a race meeting, my Monty racer will vibrate pretty much anything loose eventually, the scooter racing club runs with us at some BHR meetings, he handed me a pack of M7 nuts from Lambretta exhausts, brass, designed for exhausts and cheap. There are also tricky versions available ready for lockwiring, all on Ebay

From my post above: 'The small valve heads had M7 - all later (SF1/2/3) had M8 - similar deal with the inlet manifolds IIRC. the factory must have upped the size for a pretty good reason.'

Someone else will have to explain why they went back to 7mm on the Triples ...

same reason for the 9mm head cylinder studs rather than the twins 10mm items, I wonder if the triple twin prototype had 9mm or10mm
they did a lot to the twin and a half, including moving the plug holes to the front (silly move, full on front wheel spray)

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but the exhaust in the pic in the innitial post is one from an SF (0), not from an SF1. SF1 has the 36mm PHF carbs and the collector-box under the engine me thinks.
 
The tank filler was 100% sound metal under the paint, but took some time to get out of the ridges using various brushes and sanding tools on a Dremel, it needs a final polish off and coat of fuel resistant varnish but is looking right. Thanks all.

The next little fit and finish detail I've encountered (I'll post a run down on the other details later) is the tank sitting on the top of the original Bosch regulator which has been rubbing the bottom of the tank, I assume this isn't right? The regulator is fitted to a welded bracket on soft rubber bushes and looks correct. The tank is original and on the correctly sized and positioned rubber pads front and on he frame in front of the seat. Any ideas please? does the regulator need lower bushes to sit on or is this OK, I'm concerned about the tank bottom and the regulator being vibrated. Or am I over fussing?  :)

the Regulator should only have small rubbers at its ends, just like a 1,5 - 2mm rubber washer. anything thicker will lift it to much.
 
That parts pic shows the rubber strap bent downwards - I seem to recall that my SF1 had it bending upwards, so the reg sat between and was lower. Maybe I remember wrongly??
 
Thank you guys, and sorry about the picture. The rubber pads are way thicker than suggested, I'll try that first. The breather is certainly formed over slightly but definitely not obstructed, I will see if I can ease it.

Might be worth cutting it and fitting a metal pipe of the correct ID to reconnect at the spot where it wants to kink. I've used old Holden (Australian car) heater hose with pipe connectors in the past to get the length and shape I wanted. The early (SF/0/1) top covers had smaller breathers, which was upsized in the 2s and 3s ... so clearly you don't want it any more restricted than absolutely open on your SF0!
