1973 Laverda 1000 3C Drumbrake for sale

Hi all,

Please find the link below to find my late father’s 1973 Laverda 1000 3C Drumbrake which will be for sale at the Bonhams’ Spring Stafford Show on Sunday 27th April. The bike has been assigned lot number 260 and is listed with no reserve, it’ll be sad to see such a lovely bike go but I have no where suitable to store it. The auction will commence at 11:00 BST, starting with lot number 201.

The bike was originally delivered to Austria when new and comes with its original registration book. Inside can be found the registration document with the bike’s details including it’s manufacturing date of 1973, as well as two pictures of the bike as it was at the registration, a legal requirement in Austria at the time.

The bike undertook a full restoration starting in 2017 after it had sat in a garage since 1982 which was fully documented; a USB stick containing a complete photo log of the work will accompany the sale. Bonhams’ motorcycle department can provide a copy of this log on request prior to auction.

My father purchased the bike back in 2020 later registering it in 2021. Sadly, due to illness, he was never able to ride the bike. The bike covered 27,593km before its restoration with the odometer currently reading 4.5km since its restoration.

That's interesting, the original bike photos show the later seat. Good luck with the sale.
Just noticed it is a later bike than mine and still with drum brakes.
 
Not far away from mine Pat (1456) and I believe that Maurice owned 1444 which is a disc brake bike with the 35 mm Ceriani forks as is mine. So how many drummers were made.?

Info from Marco ? I Think only : 250 Drummer are made.

Hi, I know *1443* because it was restored here in Austria. Strange that *1443* is a drummer, but it was registered first in Austrian and the papers are showing clearly a drum brake in front. Maybe the first owner ordered drum brakes, because he did not believe in the brand new discs brakes …

I don't think anyone knows how many were made for sure. They had many more than 250 frames marked up with the Italian drum brake homologation numbers and one story goes that although they couldn't sell them in Italy fitted with disc front ends (maybe some other countries too) they could get away with it elsewhere. I wish I had a photo of mine 1304 when it was sold in Italy new in 1973 to see how it was originally. .
 
There certainly were a few more than 250 but not many. I agree with Gert that this bike was likely to have been a special order from the factory by the Austrian Importer. Not only has it the later seat but also the rear number plate bracket with the indicator stems and square rear light. It’s hard to tell if it has ND switchgear or not. Also hard to tell if it’s got the slightly later tank where the petcock outlets are inline rather than the right side outlet being slightly more forward. If I can recall Marco’s explanation, the factory was ready to start a new production run with the disc brakes but the homologation number type approval for the design change had not been received in time from the Italian authorities. As this approval had no bearing on export bikes, early disc braked bikes were produced with the old DGM 10866.OM frame stamping. To satisfy the home market, dealers could order bikes but these could only be furnished with drum brakes for this short period of time. If you look at Marco’s list of known drum braked triples still in existence, you can see all bikes post #1247 were initially registered in Italy. The outlier is #1443 which Marco has recorded as a Drummer.

By the way Marco told me he doesn't really know how many of the bikes in that list actually started life as drummers.
 
Well, #1305 is on the list Pat and first registered in Italy. I think you can use this as your claim that #1304, first registered in Italy, was also a Drummer. Hard for anyone to prove otherwise. Your “to do” list is growing 😁

Hi Ian, in the black and white pics you can see *1443* in original condition in December 1973. The colored pic is from 2017 when the Austrian restorer found and bought the bike - it was heavy modified over the years. Ciao, Gert

It's a shame it's gone straight to auction as that's 17% extra a buyer can't be putting in the sellers pocket. Either way it certainly floats my boat. I will put in a bid but I am not that hopeful as I bet there are few others with their eye on it.
 
Nice bike, I always have a look at the Stafford auction lots, gets to a big audience and will be done and dusted by 27April rather than possibly dragging on for weeks. I hope it does well, just need a couple of people that really want it!
