Hi This is John. Thanks to all that have given me help with sorting out my Laverda. Today I expect to fire it up and need advice on what type of oil to use in the crankcase. I had the primary drive cover off and installed new Cush rubbers, Primary chain, Chain tensioner. I can't seem to find the specs for engine oil. Also do I need to prime the oil pump, and if so, what does the process entail? thank you John

You don't need to prime the oil pump.

As for an oil thread.
Is it a rebuilt engine or one of unknown parentage? If the latter, pick a low detergent 10/40 or 20/50 mineral oil.

Paul

Hi Paul. Thank you for the fast reply. I was waiting on it. The bike is not rebuilt, just did some clutch work. Thank you for the oil info and also stating that I don't have to prime the sump. Much appreciated, Best Regards John

Got up early this AM and finished putting my Laverda 1000 3C back together. Ready to Change the oil. Yesterday Paul told me what type of oil to use. Checked the dipstick this morning and it appears full but I know I lost some oil when I pulled the Primary cover a couple of months ago. For that reason, I think I will do a complete oil change. Does anyone know the oil capacity for the crankcase. I assume the oil will eventually make it to the primary chain side. Thank you to anyone who replies. Best Regards John

Just fill it until you're ok on the dipstick. Run it a couple of minutes and check again. Top up.
As for primary oiling...........................................it's a long story.
On later bikes, there's a hole between the primary and the gearbox, level with the floor of the primary. It's 12, 14 or 16 mm of diameter, I forget.
So, crankcase oil lubes the primary. That's not the case on earlier bikes, where that hole is 10mm wide and 45mm from the floor of the primary. That means that the only oil going into the primary case is a dribble through the crank and gearbox bearings.
I have a 74 3C, n°2098 and suffered from a sticking and grabby clutch after having put new plates in. They were running dry in fact. I'm on the way to curing the problem after having left the bike lain down on its left hand side for an hour.

My 1974 3C never ever had that problem Paul and it was earlier than yours. I always used common or garden 20/50 mineral oil changed every 1000/1500 miles. It was absolutely fine and reached a very high mileage with no major work..

Thank you Paul. I did just what you said and then topped the oil after running. It sounds like a completely different bike. Got my parts from Wolf at Columbia Car and Bike in British Columbia. Nice guy ,fair prices and very helpful. (Like You) My shipper found the bike for me in Nebraska last year. I live in Florida. Was down with a bad hip but had it replaced 5 weeks ago today and I am back in the saddle. The bike was extremely noisy under the primary cover. Never had a Laverda before but guys like you have helped me solve the problem. New cush rubbers, chain tensioner and triple row Laverda chain. Quiet as can be expected. Quite amazed at the difference. You helped make it a great morning. Really appreciate you taking the time to help.BTW, Where do you live Paul ? I am in Lake City Fl. Extreme Northern Fl. Thanks again John

It was a long discussion but as you know, Ian Shearer suffered the same problem and eventually drilled the crankcase wall.
Maurice lays his early triples down after draining the primary.
Did you put new clutch plates in yours?
Did you drain the oil from the primary at regular intervals?

You'll get other opinions than mine.
I live in Northern France, the centre of the world. In between Belgium, Northern Europe, Germany, Southern Europe and even the UK. We even have direct ferries to Eire now.

The place to be. :)

OK, I'm moving, that house next to your would be handy, I mean a couple of extra bikes in your shop and one on the ramp would'nt get noticed would it, would save me all those third Thursdays of every month at mums as well, she would be only down the road.

The house next door may be coming up for sale in the next couple of years. Garage is full and cannot be extended, we're in a nature reserve.
But plenty of room in the house next door.

No, I just used it. It was my everyday transport for years, maybe that's why?

Bought new?
If not, you had a bike with clutch plates imbibed in oil by previous users.
And a primary case full of oil and never drained if I understand correctly?

Paul

No bought used Paul but obviously it came apart now and again for chain replacement. What I am saying is that this didn't seem to be a problem back then. Maybe the oil or the plate material has changed since then?

Maybe plate material has changed though I have it from Keith Nairn that Surflex doesn't give problems.
Keith drilled Ian's cases to have a hole level with the deck.

How much would the house next door cost? I may be interested myself…although, I prefer Spain. Maybe Andy Chain knows of something.
