I was given a copy of the Sept/Oct 2023 edition of Classic Racer today and I spotted an ad for a SFC for sale stateside. It was offered at what appeared to be a bargain price of 21,000 USD. I don’t recall any one mentioning it on the forum. I assume, if it was a genuine sale, it was snapped up pretty quick by someone in the know. Anybody know what happened to it?

I’m stateside and watch for Laverdas and haven’t seen that listed. must be a catch at that price- there’s an SF 750 in New Mexico on Craigslist that’s been listed before for $8k and a Jota on Iconic Bike Auctions recently didn’t get it,s reserve- only reached $7500.

Quite bizarre that anyone owning a '74 SFC wouldn't know its base value. Either the arse has completely fallen out of the 'exotics' market or the person selling it was doing so for a 3rd party (deceased estate?) and had no idea what price to put on it. Lucky score for whoever got it.

Ads for that have been around for a long time.
There's only one source for info about SFCs, and he's on here.
Personally, I don't know what the going price is for an SFC.
Mine will be on sale for its insurance value.

Generally speaking, insurance values are usually unrealistically high. The appraiser calculates the cost of replacing this very machine on short term. The high price value resulting from this calculation pleases the owner because it’s his pride and joy, and the insurance company is happy too, because they can charge a nice insurance premium.

Only winners you would say, until you try to fetch that price..

Yes and no.
My 3C was valued at €15 000. Way over its "market" value.
When it burnt after I'd been hit by a car who's driver was 100 % responsible, the insurance paid me € 14 000. Which is why I can afford to rebuild it.

But yes, the insurance expert in my case over valued my bikes.
Had my SFC been insured for fire risk when it was burnt, I would have made a healthy profit once I'd paid for its restoration.
Now, where's that canal?

Not sure how it works in other countries, but in Germany, these Expert reports tend to reflect what is asked for a comparable model on known platforms (in Germany Mobile.de and Autscout24.de). So - the higher the asking-price of comparable models is, the higher the Expert report is. The logic behind it is, that they assume you need to have a comparable bike as soon as possible in your hands after an accident with according write-off of your bike and therefore, you can not wait years to look for a cheep one and you might end up having to pay the highest price. .

My 944 Porsche convertable f.e. was valued at 40.000€, as there was a range of 25.000 - 45.000€ asked on online-platforms at that time (2 years ago). I would never ever be able to sell it at 40.000€ (unless someone really clueless and stupid with more money than brain cells shows up on my door step). I would earn more money if it burned down to ashes than on trying to sell it (both of which I do not intend though, just to be clear).

So - expert reports are for covering you in case of loss of the vehicle, it's not reflecting a real market value.

On this topic, do you think this 750 SFC will sell for the asking price....? See:

However, that asking price influences the expert reports that one gets if you need one for your insurance...
