1979 Laverda 1200 Mirage green???

Hi Grant

nope, doesn't make me feel any better knowing that you are in similar circumstances even for different reasons, I wish we both could be out riding...

as for a productive use of my time today, I went out to Consolidated Compressor and rented a bit of bead blasting booth time, here is a photo of the 79 1200 tank now in bare metal ready for minor dent repair before etch priming. See attached.

Hi Paul, was just looking at the House of Kolor site for a nice shade of tangello orange, wow love those pearls!! It's sort of what I had in mind for the motodd frame and highlights on the carbon body.
Next trip to Perth I'll pay a visit to the supplier for further investigation.
Have you had any experence spraying pearls? Expensive paint to practice with!!
Prior to this I was thinking about that orange 78jotadave sprayed his gold jota with. That was a pretty vibrant orange but I had in mind something along the lines of the Britten but in orange.
I think the pearl will do it for me.
I'm not that keen on laverda orange!!

Hello Again...

  Just being nosey really..

How much did they charge you for the strip and blast.... My VERY rusty Jota tank has just cost me Fifty pounds and is like new except for a few minor dents which I will lead fill.  The tank will be sealed but I can't decide which sealant to use !!??  Any suggestions please .

Hi Rob

no, I haven't sprayed a House of Kolor pearl before, but as ever I am ready to give it a try,,,,,, :D Only way to learn is to do. That Kawasaki Blazing Pearl Orange is available from Color Rite, the base code is 1420, top coat is 3420, from a 2003 Z1000    http://www.colorrite.com/department/kawasaki-10020.cfm Otherwise, the House of Kolor pearl I mentioned previously is a very close match, according to various posts on a Z1000 forum I found.

as an aside, talking to the Canadian Color Rite rep on hte phone the other day, he confirmed that the Color Rite products are actually PPG, and he suggested that the ColorRrite clear was maybe not as good as the premium clears directly from PPG, so he suggested buying the base and top coats from Color Rite, and then a premium clear from PPG.

Hi Tim

to de rust the tank interior I half filled it with "Evapo-Rust", sealed it, and rotated it once a day for several days, removes the rust completely. http://www.evaporust.com/evaporust.html?gclid=CKzGu5u4xKgCFQI8gwodaW8pqQ    Really quite amazing stuff.

to bead blast the tank exterior, I chemically stripped all the paint with Mar Hyde Tal Strip 2 Coating Remover, then used my pressure washer to wash off the last traces of the stripper, then I took it to my local compressor place that rents time in their big bead blasting cabinet. I used the bead blaster to remove the bondo from previous dent repairs, and to give the tank an overalll uniform clean surface ready for repair and etch primer. Because I already had the paint off before putting the tank in the blaster cabinet, it took me less than 10 minutes to do the tank in the blaster cabinet myself, and I paid the minimum 20 minute charge of $24, well worth it.

as for using lead for body work, I did my entire Jaguar car resto a few years ago entirely in lead, but relatively recent technology developments in body fillers have converted me away from lead. The best stuff in the industry is now Evercoat Rage Gold body filler, incredible stuff, really easy to work with, and superior results. http://www.evercoat.com/productDetail.aspx?pID=10  Only real issue is you have to buy a minimum quantity of a gallon, but it is inexpensive enough and excellent enough it is well worth it.

I have done a lot of research to find these various products, all work really well, no connection to the various companies.... With my relatively limited skills, the right products make this process much easier for me to get a really decent result.

Hi Paul, just seen an ad for the new lamborghini aventador that comes in "arancio argos" another vibrant pearlesent orange. I'm after a vibrant orange but not sure how the pearl will look on my frame, maybe too much bling and I hate bling :o. I guess I'll give it ago though, worst that can happen is that I'll have to respray it again!!
Currently up to my elbows making molds for a new seat, battery/electrical box and rear guard. Need to finish them before painting as I'll need to remove existing tabs on the frame and weld new ones on to suit. My spraying season is about over due to the weather so will have to wait till spring time and warmer sunny days. I spray outside, no hi tech spray booths here!! Over winter I plan to finish all the carbon body work as well as extra tanks for Red and Crispen so looks like I'll be a busy boy. Fun times in the shed!

Ohh ! All those thinners ...... Deep joy dude !

There is a bloke in Perth now doing pearl and metallics in powdercoat. If you are interested let me know and I will chase him down for you as I only just heard about him through another bike nut.

Hey Davo,

I'll never powder coat my frame again for several reasons. I reckon 2pac is as good, better in fact as it can be touched up. I'm also a do it myself sort of guy so hate paying for stuff I can do myself.
I just recently had the crash bars, pannier racks and other bracketry on the BM powder coated in a very metalic silver that looks pretty good.
I want a vibrant orange but not sure about the pearlly stuff yet, as i said before, maybe too much bling!!

Check out the orange halfway down the page

got busy today and bought the lumber and plastic sheeting to build a temporary paint booth in my garage. Only about $50 in materials, not bad. I framed the booth this afternoon, 6 feet 6 inches high, and 8 feet by 8 feet square. I have the 2 mil plastic sheeting stapled on the "roof" of the enclosure, will do all four sides tomorrow, figure out a doorway, and then figure out some ventilation, probably a fan blowing and a shop vac sucking. Some photos once I have completed construction. I have two complete bikes to do, so worth the effort, I think. Need to build some temporary stands to hold the various parts as wel for spraying.

I had a bit of a preparation setback, the catalyzed glazing putty I was using for my very final finish didn't harden properly, I scraped it all off with a putty knife earlier to day (mainly the side covers and tail piece), so need to buy a different product and do a fair bit of final prep sanding, so spraying is still a few days away........ :o

ps
still don't have a colour match for the Mirage green, so far, the PPG techs are still playing with various possibilities...

well, talked to my PPG paint supplier today, they tell me they can't provide an exact match for the Mirage green, probably due to a tint or flake in the clear coat. This supplier is supposed to be very well qualified, so I don't really know what to do at this point for a colour match for the original green......  I am going to go over to their shop and have a look at the sprayed test panels, and some more colour swatches. http://www.advancedcoatingstech.ca/index.html

Maybe it will wind up fluorescent pearl orange or something :o

Paul LeClair

Paul, I maintain that the top coat is also the colour coat so that is likely why they are confused.
I find it incredible though that they are stumped by it as it was a piece of cake for my painter. I think he sent a sidepanel off to headquarters in Barcelona and they scanned it there. Quite why PPG can't do that is beyond me.
Any other big name paint suppliers out there in your neck of the woods?

Hi Grant

I picked up the side panel sample from PPG today, they had it for a week without any useable result...... :(

I guess I need to do more research as to where to take it for a match for the Laverda green, but I am busy building my paint booth. I have the booth itself built, and sealed, now I am figuring out how I am going to filter the incoming air (likely a large furnace filter), pressurize the intake to positive pressure the booth, and how I am going to evacuate it with enough volume I will not be in an overspray fog. I did the cfm calculations, I will be off shortly to the local building supply superstore to see about fans to drive/draw and filter enough air without dieing or blowing up from the overspray and solvents, and to check on the best filters for my respirator. I don't need to poison myself or blow myself up just for a hobby.....

I am going to go ahead and paint the Kawasaki 650 as a test run, then I will worry again about a paint colour for the Laverda 1200..

and a photo attached of the current progress on my temporary paint spray booth, I am open to any constructive suggestions on pressurization, air filtration, and ventilation, still need to figure that out...

for a sense of scale, the booth is 8 feet by 8 feet, by 6 feet 6 inches tall. I am building individual stands for each part, you can see the first couple of parts stands inside the booth, and I am using both cross pieces and velcro on the backs of the panels and fenders to hold them in place against the paint spray volume and pressure.

Paul, you make my spray painting technique look positively stone-age. I generally hang parts on the clothes line in the back yard to paint 'em!

I only had one minor setback when a headlight shell fell off its hook. It rolled down the backyard picking up bits of grass, leaves and ants in the wet paint.

Cheers,
Cam
