1980 "Jota" Bring A Trailer

Not my bike. Is it a real one? Not listed in the registry, used to be red, etc. Bring A Trailer can command ridiculous prices if two people get bidding, though that's usually for Honda 50s and RD400s. Several SFs have sold recently on BaT. Unlike eBay, they have a 2 minute rule where the clock runs another 2 minutes after the end of the auction as a last chance, then another 2 minutes, etc. Only is final after a bid-free 2 minute period.

Probably low compression and A11 cams if it came from Italy but who knows? Those little anomalies with the registration documents having a number wrong on them have caused me problems in the past including a visit from the police in the UK.

I don't know, what is a real Jota? Presumably, one that left the factory as such and was not converted? Or one done by Slaters? You tell me. When the listing says it was red, that could mean it was a converted US 3CL, which were mostly red I think. Or maybe started as orange and someone between 1980 and 1988 thought red was nice. Most of the numbers either side of 6753 seem to be Jota on the list below.
The registry I am familiar with is this which I found through this forum some years ago.

My guess is this will sell for more than I want to pay, even if it's just four hours down the road.

There is no such thing as a real Jota.
Assembled by Slaters, assembled at the factory, assembled by a competent mechanic? It all boils down to the same.
Even "real" Jotas don't have to be orange.
Do not use the Laverdamania list if you intend using it as a reference to part with money. The contributions to the list are volontary, without any control so a 3CL can become a Jota and an SF an SFC .

Thanks, Paul. Good to know.
The lesson is, before parting with sometimes important amounts of money, be well documented, the information exists.

I did a lot of documenting before buying my SFC, and I have some friends who know these bikes well, but there are some people out there with very expensive SFs, and proud of them.

There is, or was a French market Jota, also known a a 3CL, for sale in the States for $25 000.
The Jota was not homologated in France, so looks like a Jota, has the badges and the documents, but it's a 3CL with A12 cams.

The very first Jota's were green, the next ones red, A Slater built Jota does not exist at all, because it was 3C's that they modified to 3CE spec,"E" for England, but even those bikes were built at the factory in Breganze, except for a trial/proto bike modfied and dyno'd at Slaters, when they found it worked, the factory built 3CE's for Slaters only, those bkes have the added numbers "3CE" stamped diagonally squeeezed into the "normal" numbers that we see, I never knew if this was stamped at Breganze or Collington. So an OSJ that was formerly red can easilly be a factory Jota.

So is it basically cams, compression, and carbs that make the difference between 3C and Jota? Asking about the carbs as my Jarama had 36s, and 4C cams.
The bike in the listing has 3CL stamped diagonally between the numbers.

Are you on the states? did you just buy your Jarama in the last year or two?

Carbs are standard 32mm, exhaust has large collector and empty cans.

I own a couple of Jotas that were built at the factory as Jotas and sold to Australia with all the high performance parts that were supposed to be in a full house Jota.
The 3CL stamped on a angle was stamped on all of the 1979 frames regardless of whether they were a 3CL or a Jota, no bikes built as Jotas had any identifying stamps on them.
Just one thing I did notice about this bike is that the frame numbers were stamped onto the swinging arm plate I thought 1980 bikes had the numbers stamped on the headstock.
But then again who would know with Moto Laverda

I have been told that most Jota's sold in the USA were dealer built bikes. Initially they were bought from Slaters but once US customs and the EPA were aware dealers were importing bikes that were not legal to import (too loud exhaust, and not meeting emissions spec) the dealers bought the parts to make a 3CL in to a Jota. Two different USA dealers have told me this.

So is a factory built Jota and a dealer built Jota any different, no they are the same. So unless Piero has records listing what bikes they built as Jota's, no one knows.

20 numbers away from mine :)
