Hi all just wondering if all the 3Cs had top brackets on the air filter boxes ? both the ones I have only have lower brackets and no holes for the top brackets in the box but in the parts book it shows two top brackets.

Kev, do you have little tabs on your frame for the top brackets to attach to? My '73 had brackets top and bottom, my '78 only came with bottom brackets but it has frame tabs. No holes at the top in the airbox but mine might be a replacement, 30 year plastic boxes are usually gone by now.

Ken it does have the tabs for the brackets to go on but as the air boxes have no holes they might be newer ones i have just bought some of the top brackets in a job lot so will probably drill some holes.

Grant this is one i am building from bits and have no carbs or rubbers yet it still looks nice though and is coming on well

Nice. Looks just like my first one, with the horns mounted off the oil cooler.

Kev, go ahead and drill holes if you want authenticity, but I can tell you from experience that it's a buggar of a job to install the Nyloc nuts inside the air box, and they really don't serve any purpose. As Grant says, the carburetor concertina rubbers push the airbox back against the frame tubes as much as is needed, the bottom brackets can also be eliminated but it's kind of nice to have them to feel safe. I can tell you that if the airbox cracks it's very hard to find an adhesive that will glue it back together. Mine cracked from the holes at the bottom and I really couldn't glue them back together properly, had to bond a large patch to the inside with silicon adhesive, really couldn't solvent weld the plastic at all.

Kev, dont mount the airbox with brackets at the top, it always cracks and breaks. Regards Pat

Doesn't look like I will be fitting the top brackets then, I might put them on till I can Get some inlet stubs carbs and rubbers just to hold the box in place. Do the horns ever foul the front mudguard they look pretty close to me.
                                Cheers Kev

Is that horns mounted on the oil cooler Kev? Richard Slater told me never to mount them there because the cooler fractures. I'm a treasure trove of good news tonight aren't I?

Yes Pat thanks for that  :( I have another cooler the same without the horn mounts ready and waiting .I dont know what it is with cracks and my bikes a couple of weeks ago it was the wheels on my special and now my air filter box and my oil cooler I think I may be cracking up still a long way from starting so they should be ok for a while  ;)
                                      cheers Kev
