3C Headlamp Shell Holes

I need a little Laverda history and advice regarding the headlamp shell for a 3C.  I have four 180 mm headlamps shells that I have somehow collected, and two of them have large holes for the wiring on the back.  The holes are grommeted and measure about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

The third shell has no hole in back (this shell was on the motorcycle when I purchased it).

All first three shells have the small hole in the bottom.  (The fourth shell is beyond description...looks like PO was a little too eager with a hole saw).

My question is this...I can't see how the wiring would fit tightly in the large grommeted hole of the first two headlamp shells.  Where these
holes (with wiring loom) sealed somehow from the factory?  Or did the wire loom just run through the large hole loosely?  It looks like this would be an easy ingress for water and dirt.  Is this a concern that has been dealt with?

And of course the two shells with the large openings that I have are the ones in the best condition.  I can't seem to find any information on this in the forum or elsewhere.  Any insight would be appreciated.

Hi Pebbles,
I'm using a Yamaha headlight on my 3C, and the shell has 3 rather large holes in it, I'd guess somewhere between 1 and 1.5 inch diameter.
To have it neat and sealed, I have used rubber membranes available for car bodies, like these: http://www.kabel-schmidt.de/KFZ-Elektrik-und-Zubehoer-fuer-Oldtimer-Autos-Motorraeder-br/Tuellen-Isolier-und-Durchfuehrungstuellen-sowie-Schutzkappen/Karosseriemembranen/
To get the strands of the wiring loom through the membranes, I holed them with a hole punch, diameter slightly smaller than of the respective loom strand. Worked a treat.

Regards,
Stefan

The original shell on my 3C has two grommeted holes, as well as another small hole below them.  The size of the big grommet holes is approx. 3/4 inch.  The paint finish is gloss black.

The shells on my 1980 Jota and 1982 series 2 Mirage have one big hole, approx. 1 and 1/2 inches in size, as well as a small hole which is plugged with a rubber stop.  Both of these are painted in a rough crinkle type finish.

The shell with no hole may be from a Ducati Monster. But easy to cut a fresh hole.
Advantage is these shell are available new.

I have the same holes on a 3C shell as Tom, but is gloss black, not crinkle.

Thanks for all the replies...the rubber membranes suggested by Stefan are a great idea.

Out of curiosity, if some triples did come from the factory with that large hole in the back of the headlamp shell, what was
used (if anything) to seal it up?  I do not see anything in the parts diagrams.  I can't image the wire bundle being that large in diameter.

Grant, on the rebuilds you perform, what is your preferred way to deal with the large diameter hole?  Or do you just
stay away from those headlight shells?

They have a rubber grommet as standard.
Believe me, you will be struggling to fit all the cables into that one big hole.
Main loom, 2 x instrument console sub looms, 1 x ignition switch sub loom, 2 x switchgear sub looms.
Hole filled.
