3c starter clutch

Rebuilding starter clutch. The failed one has no holes in the outer, the newer one has 6 holes drilled to allow oil into the spring/pin. Are the 6 holes original or did someone drill these? Failed one has done 200,000km approx in my 3C, ramps broken up, rivets sheared off.

The 16007 C3 bearing in the other half of the starter clutch failed before my trip around Australia. When I was prepping the bike for Tassie last year, the bearing felt bad, and I changed it again. The new bearing has done around 4000km, and has failed again. C3 is wide clearance, do I use that again, or is something else causing this bearing to fail?
C4 would have higher clearance, there is also a "deep groove" option.

I know the factory added the 6 holes to SF3 starter clutches, Marty. Not sure about triples but they may have made this improvement around the same time (1976). I've modded two SF starter clutches by adding the holes - if nothing else they allow a pin to be inserted and tap out stuck plungers.

"allow a pin to be inserted and tap out stuck plungers."
I thought that was the whole point of those drillings, to aid getting out the stuck plungers, nothing to do with oil getting in, if anything they will allow it out by centrifugal force, but remember the clutch is stationary other than when operating the starter motor (hopefully).

Yes, that's why I drilled mine, Clem. Agree about the centrifugal force. But some owners seem to like oiling the starter clutch.

Starter freewheel isn't stationary!! So the oil would indeed be flung out. Only the gear or sprocket is stationary once the starter motor is not turning. Unless a triple operates differently from a twin.
