3C starter gear bearing

Bearing is a 16007, which is listed in the green book as a standard ball bearing.

As you might remember, the bearing seized, stuffing the starter motor, just before the big trip. I fitted a new bearing, and new springs in the starter clutch while I was there. Bearing was full of black shit, burnt oil?

Got to Reds, and he showed me another bearing from a 180 which looked the same, black shitty stuff in the bearing.

Well I just pulled the starter clutch to look at it before Bellingen. Bearing is about to seize again, quite lumpy, and full of black shit again. WTF? Has done roughly 15500km.

I will be picking up a couple of new bearings in the morning, 16007, C3 clearance. See what happens to them. Theory is the C3 clearance will hold more oil. Don't know. What do you guys think?

Someone posted a pic with I think 4 small holes in the starter case and implied they allowed? more oil into the case or made it easy to add some oil manually. Piet said no it made no difference. Your bearing failing so quickly is very odd Marty as I bet you know.
