3C with charging issues ... Maybe

Hi guys....
been long absent here since I sold my Jota. I do have a question.
a friend has a rather ratty 3C (#2500). He left it at my place for awhile to get a few things sorted .
It has never been a strong runner, something I attribute to sever owner neglect  :(

I got it running fairly well but think its starting to have an issue with the valve seats. (another story and off track here)
He just called to tell me it was running great then not so great then not at all. I now suspect the original rectifier or other charging issues, It has the original Bosch ignition. My guess is it draining the battery and doesn't have enough current to produce a good spark does this sound reasonable?

Easy enough to check the charging system. Just connect a voltmeter to the battery and start the engine. Volt reading should go up to over 14V when you rev it beyond about 3000 rpm. If not, you have a problem.

Presumably the ignition is Bosch HKZ. The power for the ignition is generated separately to that which charges the battery. So it should run (once started) without the battery.

Thanks guys:

I have not and won't likely get over to his place for awhile now but will ask him to check the fuse and stick a voltage meter on it, hopefully he has one. I was under the impression, incorrect perhaps that the early CDI unites had to have a good battery to fire.

He has other issues such as very little valve clearance on the intake and exhaust on #3 and can't seem to wrap his head around the fact
that its most likely causing some issues, and I did notice # 3 is running hotter than than #1 and #2
.
PS: Red, My old 77 Jota (metalic orange tank silver stripe down the middle) ended up down your way saw it on Ebay at one point hopefully its treating its new owner well, have you run across it?

The cdi system needs no battery assistance - the only power needed is to work the relay that breaks the red charging wire - or you may have the "torpedo" type that breaks all the CDI wires. If it's the latter type - they can be a bit unreliable. - Regards - Phil
