3CL electrical parts missing

My project 3CL (from 1976) has had most of its? electrical system robbed out. Using the ?green book? I?ve now identified two of the remaining missing components.
I need a rectifier ? is this part unique to the Laverda? and where/how does it locate on the bike.
I need an ?emergency stop relay? that sits on the spine of the frame under the tank. My loom has a yellow and yellow/black wire and the green book identifies these wires for this relay. Is this part unique to Laverda?s aswell?
Will my local jap? bike breakers yard have similar parts that I could use?

Andy,

Are you intending to use the original Bosch HKZ ignition? if not then you can disregard the "emergency stop relay". The rectifier is nothing fancy, just a common 20-30A item with 4 connections. Mine is located below the triangular metal compartment that's behind the battery tray. If you can't source one drop me a line via PN, I have several.

Hi Andy

I have an original 3CL rectifier that you're welcome to. Not many folk still use them because they don't have any regulating function and you run the risk of cooking your battery, even with the feeble output of an original Laverda alternator. Nearly all bikes these days, and most Laverdas that have had any electrical updating done use a Regulator Rectifier that's much kinder to the battery, even with the crap 3CL alternator.

You only need the engine stop relay if you're using an original Bosch HKZ ignition system. That seems unlikely because AFAIK it was only used on the 3C. By the time the 3CL came out they were using the Bosch BTZ ignition, which doesn't need the stop relay. But I'm not a Laverda history buff, so maybe I'm wrong and some of the early 3CLs may have had HKZ igntions. I may also have a discarded stop relay somewhere, but there's nothing special about it. It's just a SPST relay that you can buy for about $5 from any electrical shop.

Quite frankly though, if your bike does have the HKZ system, then you'd be better off replacing it with something modern like DMC or Ignitech. There are people on this forum who can supply new ignition systems.

I dunno whether I've been of any help with this post. I suppose it depends on whether you are building a 100% faithful reproduction of what came out out of the factory, or whether your goal is to build a bike to ride that looks original but has a few practical upgrades here and there.

Cheers,
Cam

Hi Andy - AS Cam says -  the CDI system (plenty of 3cl's with that)can just use a cheap box relay - fit it to break the red wire from the pulse coil as per 1st series triples.  THe "torpedo" type was, I believe, as a sop to the US market that insisted all parts of the ignition must be cutout! - Regards - Phil

Early 3CLs and 1200s had CDI/HKZ ignitions. i have had several in my time.
I think the change to BTZ was made when they changed to Marzocchi suspension, as all the CDI bikes I have seen had Cerianis and all the BTZ bikes have Marzocchis. For sure there may have been a small number of parts bin specials though.

Maybe you are confused?
Both are Bosch systems.
The CDI is a self contained system that bolts to the plate I sent.
The BTZ system comprises a single and a double coil under the tank, and 2 black boxes under the sidepanels.

I've just re-read them and can assume that I don't need the Engine stop relay because I'll be using the BTZ system
Andy
Hence the confusion.
