Maybe it's a prototype. Besides ....... if you are buggered in the nautical sense ...... then maybe they had a sense of humour at the factory when they made the manuals.

Sorry-that was a popular myth... and the cabin boy was Tom , although there was a Master Mate (doesn`t get any better does it?)

I'm 99.9% sure it was "Master Bates" along with Seaman Staines in the original black and white Pugwash cartoons that I watched when I was a kid. I remember the captain shouting "Bates!" at him to get his attention. I don't think it was ever Roger the cabin boy though. It was always Tom.
I suspect the BBC got rid of the original incriminating earlier recordings and tried to re-write a slightly cleaner version when the series reappeared in colour in 1974. None of the early (1957-1966) black and white cartoons exist on YouTube. The tapes are probably in a padlocked trunk in the basement of the BBC building.
