500 cutting out.

Corinne, my wife's 500 is afflicted by intermittent cutting out when shutting the throttle coming to ,a stand still. Carbs would seem to be the obvious place to look, but they've been off a couple of times, cleaned and blown out. I did find a float level that was rather low but that's all.
Otherwise, it works fine albeit a slight fluff when coming on to the needle which an in depth looking at carb settings would no doubt cure.

Could this intermittent cutting out be ignition related? The machine is running the original Bosch setup and ND coils.

Thanks for any tips.

Hey Paul I assume you have checked the insulation on the wires from the pickups or the airgap?????
Not the air gap. Will do. I've fiddled with just about everything on this bike.
Insulation is ok, I think that I coaxed some heatshrink around the pick up wires. But will double check.
I do have an Ignitech from Red that I intended for my TT2. TT2 needs reburbishing after having gone swimming.

Paul, this sounds a lot like an infuriating problem I had on my Jarama. When the clutch was pulled in the cable flexed enough to rub against the high tension lead and over time the insulation broke down, thus cutting out the left cylinder. It wasn't noticeable in normal riding, only at low speed. I happened to have the Jarama at a Norton rally in Wyoming to which Roger Slater came on his rotary Norton, and he helped me finally determine what the problem was.

Checked the clearance on the pick ups. Spec is 0.1 to 0.2. (For info, the wider the gap, the later full advance kicks in)
One gap was at 0.13, the other something like 0.25, so I closed that one up to around 0.15. Corinne still needs to test the bike.

Ideally, I should replace the wiring to the pick ups. Dig it out from the resin and replace.
At the moment, the wires have been a few centimetres from the pick ups and joined to the wires from the harness using small screw blocks.

if bosch VR pickups, the total effective air gap ( TEAG ) is crucial, ie two pole faces, where one pole face pulls out from the molded housing, One pole face that has pulled will override the minimum distance ie you cannot get closer than the closest pole. Say closest pole face is, 0,1m/m and the other normal pole is at 0,2m/m then the TEAG is 0,3m/m. The discarded single pole TEK pickups with a single pole face are far superior and plentiful for little money, wrecker recyclers have them these days, any Kwaka 250 GPZ ZZR series for one... made an adapter plate for upgrade... Thanks, will look into that.
