Hi all,
I have a pitted stanchion and am going to either get it rechromed or get a new one and thought while the front is out I'd check with you to see what's recommended.
Is there a cost effective upgrade I ought to do?
The bike is run about on the road, I'm not loony fast but I like to get on.
Thanks

fit a nice set of 35mm Racetech Gold Valves and a set of Eibach springs
will transform the front end handling

is not too expensive
have no idea who does them in the UK
I do my own conversions as I stock Racetech and Eibach gear but am located in Aussie so no help to you

have a set of Monty 500 forks to do next week sometime

Hi Giles,
Upgrade?
What don't you like about the current set up?What are you trying to improve with an upgrade?Suspension setup can be a very personal thing and hopefully you've asked yourself the above questions.
Also your front suspension doesn't work in isolation for a confident and inspiring ride you need to consider what the rear shocks are doing. They need to work together!

Haven't found the stock 500 front end really lacking.  I've raised the pre-load a little (mainly to compensate sagged springs ::) ) and use quite light oil on wifeys' bike, very compliant for road work.  Perfectly adequate for the size, weight and capabilities of the bike, might be a bit stretched on the racetrack though.

Thanks all.
I did spend some time and money last summer on the rear end with Robin from Falcon making some shocks to suit me.
I was wondering whether the front had a recommended twerk (haha phone spell for tweak!), and it's good to know the stock setup is fine.
Mine feels crude but it's afaik never even had new fluid. -and one side is leaking...
What's the best way to clean out the forks?

I'd be inclined to get them hard chromed as it is more durable than the original finish anyway.
They also true them before re-finishing so at least you know they are straight.
Similar to Piet I used Progressive springs and spacers to set the sag then tried different grades of good quality fork oil to suit my weight.
Even with the stacked seals never noticed any stiction. Also lifted the forks 15mm through top yoke.
Keeping the back end quite compliant made it more balanced over some of the B road surfaces.
