500 pistons. What have I got ??

Have just taken the top off what I was led to believe was an early 1997 pre-balance shaft Alpino engine, #1303. Was greeted by a pair of S1 cams, & upon cylinder head removal found these AE pistons. Having rung a piston ring supplier was told the number stamped on the top, 72-66939\C, couldn't be found even, in their old AE reference archive. The pistons themselves look pretty much the same as those fitted to my old F500. ( I have one for reference that I'd kept as a souvenir, after the bike dropped a valve into it ). So am assuming this Alpino engine?? isn't quite as standard as I was told ? I haven't got any further with engine strip but, can a wise one on here who knows way more than me offer any clues please ??

Hi Paul, thanks for quick reply. Assume when you say hi comp that they're actually Monty/F500 pistons then ??
This is the AE casting mark on the underside of piston crown. Apart from the hand stamped number 72-66939\C on top the piston, there are no other markings.

I've no idea if they're F500 pistons. I doubt it though. Standard 500 pistons are flat topped.

Am assuming that because the number 72 is followed by a - & not a . this is a standard size piston, & the rest of the number is for some part reference, not an overbore size ?? The Laverda part number is however different. I quoted Monty & F500 together as the part number for standard 72mm Monty & F500 piston given in the parts book are the same.

Montys were a very much "I didn't get what I ordered machine" as Clem would have explained.
F500 pistons would likely have been standard.

Hi, tried this company but unfortunately they were unable to help.
Fortunately for me though, the person I spoke to was a fan of the Laverda Jota, so phoned around his contacts & found this company that makes/supplies all sorts of piston rings.
