Is bigger, better, or over the top in regards to battery size , as long as it fits ????? And any recommendations ?? Thanks

On my SF I use a Motobatt MB18U, 22.5Ah, 280CCA (the critical bit). Very happy with it, no problems, though probably bigger than needed.

I have heard of another forum member succesfully running a 16.5AH with 210CCA on their SF. I kept a note of this with the intention of buying such a replacement when the time comes. Cheaper and lighter!

A lot depends on which charging system you have.
If it's unregulated, you want a lead acid (wet) battery, preferably at least 28Ah.
If it's reliably regulated you can use AGM or Gel Batteries including Odyssey.
If it's vibration isolated and weight/space is an issue, and your voltage regulation is super regulated/monitored, you can use a Li ion battery.

When I had the std generator (ie no charge at idle) I used a Yuasa 18AH with zero problems for years. Way smaller than the std monster they came with. Many lithium batteries are called 'starting batteries' because they don't have capacity, only high CCA, and thus need constant charge from an alternator to retain their necessary minimum voltage.

Perhaps someone here can fill me in on whether there are Li batteries that have a holding capacity. The SSB HVT-1 AGM that I've recently had trouble with ran my ignition system for over 100km with no charge going in whatsoever and it still cranked and started the bike the next day - a cold morning. No way would the LiFePo I'm about to use would have coped. So not sure how long an SF sitting at traffic lights at night would cope on such a battery.

Hamish may be wrong with his second comment, Odysey batteries do not like single phase charging systems on Laverda, not enough volts or some such, regulated or not, plenty have tried them and been dissapointed, the same might apply to AGM as well, I dont know, but on TOG (BTZ stock charging single phase), I have always used lead acid, old style batteries, I once ran for a month or two on a tiny batterry thing robbed out of the wifes Honda 400/4, started and ran fine with no problems and left space for two lunchboxes (dont do that they taste of petrol and oil when consumed), which means eaten to non native UK speakers.
CLEM

A smaller motobatt has served me well (I can't remember the part number) but anyway, to my point for consideration .... in the case of gererator/regulator breakdown, you can get an awful long way sparking merrily on battery juice alone. Esp if you are still on points.

I used a hand me down Odessey from the Motodd in my 750SFC without any charging problems. I found what didn't turn the Motodd over would turned the SFC over with ease.

My SF2 750 came w/ an Odyssey Extreme ODS AGM 16L that holds a charge consistently and charges up very fast. BUT it is very heavy and at 6.5" high is a very tight fit against the upper frame tubes and a PITA to remove/install. I've used Shorai Lithiums in my Aprilias - very light and small and have held up for years- but not sure if they work well w Laverda charging systems- any opinions from those who have used them?
