Hi all,

I have never dismantled the 750 starter before.
The idea is to overhaul it and repaint the covers.

Dismantling top cover was quite obvious.
But what about the right procedure to remove the main body cover ?
Only unscrew the four large screws ? (impact driver ?)
Something else ?

Many thanks
St?phane

St?phane, not much chance un-doing with an impact driver.

Support the empty body with a thick bar through it under a press.  With a breaker bar and the appropriate bit under pressure of the spindle you might stand a chance.  Same for doing it all up again.

I drill them out and replace them with new ones.

Hi Stephane, I recently refurbed my starter. Cleaned up the armature, brushes still had plenty of meat on them, replaced some dodgy insulation, cleaned up and regreased planetary gears, repainted body and cover. I didn't find it necessary to remove the 4 screws as the stator looked happy enough.
Cheers, Pat

Thanks Piet, Marnix and Pat for your comments.
Think I will follow Marnix's way as far as I can find four new and identical screws.

Cheers

St?phane,

You will still need to do them up with the press method.  Just tightening them with your manual pressure will hardly be enough, not to mention the damage that can occur when the bit slips out of the screw slot.

Screws should be in stock at OCT, the dynamo ones are (refurbished one recently).
