750 - Tappet adjusters - hardening?

Howdy folks.

My SF valve clearance screws have been beaten up over the last 60k miles. First time I saw them they were a mess.

At the last setting, I smoothed them out (re-rounded) . I feared, at the time, that I might me breaking through any case hardening.

4k miles later, I have this....


Are the adjusters case hardened?

I bought new ones from Keith Nairn at same time as new valves. My adjusters weren’t worn like yours but the valves were pitted badly.
Are these original Laverda ones?

Opposite for me... Valve tops look OK (very slight dishing) but adjuster screws are taking the bashing.

Seen much worse - both pitting of the adjuster and concave valve tips. So glad to kiss that scenario goodbye - can't recommend the Rotax tappet adjuster mod more highly. Rivet counters can suffer in silence (aka tapping and rattling)

I have not seen factory ones since long before the factory closed down. All the screws I have seen look like they have a tip of hardened material, hard chrome, spray weld, stellite type stuff, not just case hardening that you could rub through as you have done. Are all four in similar state? Are you sure you are getting enough oil there? I would replace that screw. The Rotax mod can require a bit of work and best done with the head off. On mine I had to tip a mm off the valves and relieve a scrap off the underside of the rocker arm but it was well worth it to be quit the constant uncertainty of how the adjusters and valve tips were holding up. That said, my nr 2 bike that I took to Breganze, has done heaps of miles with normal type adjusters without undue wear.
