750SF Starter Motor

Okay, I rode the SF again today and took it to the hills to see how it preformed. Things to fix or just ponder, the starter gets quite tired when hot, the clutch drags the rear shock absorbers are shot (Koni) and the front end need to be serviced and lastly it's LOUD!

Is this what a 750 starter should sound like, the bike is cold.

Your fuel taps are turned off, it's not exactly spinning like a top that's for sure. Bit rattly as well.

Yep, if that's a full battery I reckon a starter service will improve it outa sight. Not difficult to disassemble and clean up - the usual brushes and commutator areas. If it spins faster the starter clutch will probably be a lot happier as well, but always worth servicing the starter clutch (new springs and maybe rollers - cheap stuff).

That starter is shot , just waiting for the smoke to come out of it , usually folk rebuild their Laverdas with brand new bores and compression , but never get the starter serviced that has been turning a old engine over and theres that burning smell ,this one is old and tired and needs a full service .
Sprag clutch wants a service and id check out the planet gears that the starter drives through another untouched area .
just had two Starters ,totally rebuilt by a firm in London, Francis and Robson, great job, 4 week turn round at the moment thou .
Once done you wont believe how tired the one you had, Was .
Use ear plugs and there not as loud , is my answer to the beautiful loudness . 🙂
Wolfgang in Canada can do recon/ Exchange , starter motors for £500 uk pounds .Delivered

Unless they have been seriously neglected/abused for many years, the ND starters are pretty bulletproof. A general internal clean-up, a skim over the commutator and new brushes usually brings them back to top working condition. No rocket science involved.

The starter clutch requires periodic servicing, which mostly includes a new set of springs. If not attended to, a faulty clutch will gradually self-destruct.

I can supply NOS brushes if required.

50 years turning over these750 and when the smoke arrives your done , and they do get neglected and abused especially as by now Laverdas have had lots of good and bad owners , and No Kickstart , which caused maximum abuse on the starter motor . Unlike the Yamaha XS 650 which shared its abuse . 🙂

Great! I'll get onto Red and see what he can supply.

I reckon it would be damn expensive to send it to the UK from Australia for a rebuild!

you simply MUST rebuild the sprag clutch, and the starter itself, because if the sprag fails to disengage, the starter (in a running engine) will turn at about 35,000RPM and self destruct, it sounds cattle trucked anyway AND YOU WONT FIND ANOTHER with any degree of ease, its the same as fitted to a Honda S800 sports car but they made 10,000 more Laverda twins than they did Honda sports cars, even if you do find one, it will be mega money, SO>>>>> to save all the grief, have the starter rebuilt by the speciailst mentioned before it explodes/burns itself, and get the sprag done by yourself or by a known Laverda speciaist. Then look at the sprag every other year at the minimum.

Just open it up, clean up the collector and if really necessary, new brushes and we'll all be long gone before the motor needs looking at again.
