'76 3CL resto' continues.........

Bike is now totally stripped - everything!

I noticed that the stand lugs on the frame were damaged, so I took the frame to Slaters for repair. Richard Slater was also interested in looking at the down tubes about 5" from the headstock - looking for stress cracking! Mine didn't show any, is this familiar to anybody else????

So here are the before and after photo's - they've done a good job. Slaters also 'untwisted' my main stand and repaired/ braized the battery support bracket that was welded to the battery tray.

So next, the frame and swingarm are off to the powdercoaters in Brum' (very recommended and used before) for a nice shade of silver/ali' (RAL9006). Meanwhile, the chrome is off to the Platers' in Peterborough (recommended, but not used before).

Once I get the frame back I can safely say the stripdown is over and the rebuild has begun :D :D :D

Oh my God! :o is that the light at the end of the tunnel or a train coming?

with all that work on the stand lugs it is a pity they didn't upgrade it to the later twin spring version
looks like a fairly nice repair though

Later centrestands have attachments for 2 springs, symmetric on each side of the stand, and the little pin in your picture welded to the frame bracket replicated on both sides. You're at a great time to do it, turn up another pin and weld it on, and weld another little spring attachment bracket onto the other side of your centrestand.
Big advantage is that if one spring ever breaks the stand doesn't fall down, heeled over at 60 degrees with your elbow scraping the road  :o ... well, we can dream  :D

Just had the 2 spring done on my Jota by Keith...fine, but of course if you take most of the tang off to accomodate the new sidestand, its abit of a swine to use.I'd get one of those side stand kits if I were you (and keep the centre stand too)...do a search and find the threads about it. I paid a fortune for one of the originaltype side stands (from slaters) , but seriously don't use them..you will cry when your baby falls off it, believe me!

Looks like you have a later stand, early type should look like this, also if frame and stand repairs have not been tested it is worth assembling everything and making sure it all works correctly before its powder coated.

Looking at Keiths' photo makes me realise that I might need to sqeeeeeeeeze my stand legs together to reduce the gap/play between the lugs and stand. The stand pivot bolts also had these bushes - are these correct?

Trouble is I don't know what is right or wrong with this bike - I wonder what other differences I'll find as I go through it......

Completely off topic but..... Is that a dishwasher in the background Keith???????

Not just any old washdisher mate, it's a Hobart FX20, swallows up a set of mucky triple crankcases and spits them out looking lovely.  :) :)

The (hardened) steel bushes are correct.  No need to squeeze the stand legs closer to the frame, will only get the bores out of alignment.   With the bushes and washers fitted, the stand should be centred to the frame without binding or firm movement.  It should swivel easily up and down without undue slop.  Easy to check and correct when fitted without the spring/s on a bare frame.  Good time to check if the stand sits squarely and bears against its' stops properly.  Most of 'em clang on the exhaust collector... :o

Looks like my stand already has the lugs, new springs required though......

Your stand has attachments for 2 springs but the frame has only the single post/lug. Frame and centrestand are from different models. Doesn't mean they won't work, just get another post/lug welded onto the frame if you want to use 2 springs.

Quite common, especially on hard-worked (mercilessly thrashed?) bikes!  Have repaired a fair number of bikes over the years, next one already waiting.

Fork, tyre and/or brake upgrades tend to enhance the tendency to cracking... :o
