78 Jota in Kansas City, US

"All motor work done".
By whom?
Crank rebuild?
Rebore?
Full head job?
Or does it mean they adjusted the valve clearances?

Is there any country where you can get a bike without title registered (outside of the countries where you can get a masters in astro physics from the guy down the back alley)?

Ummm,  :-X :-X
But you'd be surprised what a bit of careful wording, stat decs and paperwork can achieve here!! (Now where did I put that Masters Certificate? ;))

It sort of looks as though it's still got the original UK rego plate on it. Might have been imported under an import permit and stored away without ever being registered (I still have one of those myself). As long as there's an import permit (and custom s clearance docs) along with a bill of sale to the nominee on the import permit it should be ok..
At under 10k miles exactly how much 'motor work' would you expect other than valve clearances and cleaning/balancing carbs? Other than the price it looks pretty good to me: If I was in the market for one and the Aussie Peso was a bit stronger I'd put in an offer at $15-17k quite happily.

I don't understand why it needs a repaint. It looks really nice to me. Perhaps the vendor thinks that all Jotas are meant to be orange.

Cheers,

bazzee

P.S. I actually like the fence. Kind of random and distressed.

Google image search shows the identical image was originally linked to an advert for the bike in Car & Classic posted by a fairly well known UK classic bike retailer. That advert has expired but I'm unable to find when. A call to that UK dealer would probably clear things up if anybody is interested.

You can register anything in the UK. There are container loads of bikes shipped here constantly. A receipt, a NOVA (tax paid) certificate and a dating letter from an authorised person (Clem) will do it.

Speaking as someone who actually has imported about 8 bikes from the States in the last 10 years or so, the issue isn't registering it this end, it's getting it past US customs who can impound any vehicle they believe SHOULD have a title. Can be overcome but a lot of risk, expense and delay = not worth it. With a title = piece of piss (mostly).

I contacted the seller via email concerning the title issue and this was the reply. He doesn't say the UK title is in his name. that would be and issue I would think.

"I have the UK title and paperwork,  No import docs, bike came into states in a sealed container via military.  You would need to find a way to get title"

Does that sound correct? I'm suspicious.
Get the licence plate number from him then go onto the UK government web site and you will be able to see the vehicle details.

The shippers I use won't touch a vehicle without a title, not saying it can't be done? Dealers tend to have exclusive use of a container so perhaps being trade US customs take a more liberal view, dunno?
Having a valid UK "log book" (title in US speak) should help, even if not in current owners name, would be my view.

Many States in the USA did not require titles on motorcycles till the mid 1980s or 1990s. Maine requires no title on motorcycles prior to the 1995 model year. Georgia is a no title State till 1985.

You buy and sell those older motorcycles in a "no title State" using the license plate registration and a bill of sale.
