82 jota main fairing bolt

Same setup 81, RGS, 10mm 8.8 high tensile bolt. Has anyone gone to 12mm? Drill a bigger hole in the bracket on the headstock. Chris P and I thinking counterbore an alloy sleeve and fit a shorter cap head bolt, less flex. Anyone tried this. I do remember breaking an RGS one many years ago as well.

I have had fairing and racks break in the past. The fix is using belts and braces to coin a phrase. I have 3 fixings on both sides of my SS Bevel fairing all mounted using rubber grommets to dampen any movement so the mirrors are clear. Can you change the single bolt to a wider tube Marty maybe 25mm dia, with threads on either end to expand its sectional dimensions?

On the RGS it's not unusual to fit a solid alloy bush in place of the original isolastic type of rubber sleeved steel bush. Obviously removes any flex (an excess of which is the issue) seemingly without detriment to instruments and bodywork

Yep.

Not much space for the bolt hex, but a couple minutes with the angle grinder fixes that easy.

Reckon a solid bush would be an advantage on the 180s too once the vibes are dialed out as well as possible. Far too much movement with the original (and mushy by now) rubber mount.

Marty, as I told you my 80 Jota came from the factory with a 14mm 8.8 bolt fitted for the front fairing mount. Perhaps an easier and more efficient way would be to do as the factory did. Don’t know why they reduced the size to 10mm but it seems like it’s not a practical upgrade😊.

Marty, they didn’t change the bracket. There’s plenty of meat there to have a 14mm hole drilled in it. I don’t know why I bother sometimes 😤

Well Bugger me……. After I had removed my beer goggles and had a closer look. Eye spy’s a 14mm bolt on my 83 Corsa ;)
Tom when I grow up I wanna be just like you!

Looking forward to a fang and a froffie with you soon 🍻

Wonder why my 81 and 82 had 10mm. Think I need to upgrade my sponsor! What sort of bush do you have hooksey? I have 2 that have an inner of 12mm with a sleeve down to 10mm

Graeme nearly had a fatal when the 12.9 we put in failed ( sheer ) ( very early failure too ) just as he pulled into the servo, lower grade has better fracture resistance in sheer, as this bolt is in, be careful Martin.... critical component. We used a bush and 8.8 or 10.9 which is in service after decades. Bigger 12.9 assures nothing, need to confirm sheer rating not end on end tensile. Even then your post concerns me, from hard won experience. HTH j *** this topic has been covered prior as i recall???

This, very pertinent, as mentioned above. j
