Apologies all - i did a search but came up blank, and i have the small Italian lusso guide - but i can't deciper it and where (if at all) it advises how to adjust the timing on a 98cc sport lusso and point gap etc - any advice
thanks in advance

Isn't there a modern-day rally-type equivalent held these days? Apparently not a race, but nobody told most of the field.

There's a rally, evocazione as the Italians call it, or re-enactment in English perhaps.
Concerning Piet, it was the Milano Taranto and if Nick is Nick Alcock, he rode the London to Breganze on a 98 to celebrate the ride by a couple of scooters from Breganze.

Don't be too downhearted if your first effort to time the bike results in it running but with retarded timing. I tried my best to get it right, over and over again, but first start up ran like a stationary farm engine at a show :ROFLMAO:

if you go onto RPW.IT you can download manuals look in altre Marche

Maybe useful to know that you can turn the cam of the points ignition in any position, since it is on a conical spindle without a key and locked by a nut (with left hand thread).

I initially used the cigarette paper (Rizla) method to judge when the points were opening and coincide that with the timing mark. Perhaps because I am a non-smoker it didn't work well. I switched to using two crocodile clips attached to the points and a multimeter to tell me when the points opened, which I felt was far more accurate. Sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs about this. I discovered this afternoon that the crap running was due to a faulty condenser anyway. She fills her lungs and sings now :D

if you have condenser problems try the gammatronix then you can remove the condenser completely. I will not go into the description now as you can call it up on the web. Have one fitted to my Bianchi tonale and it helps to produce a nice fat blue spark at the plug...

IMHO, a full electronic set up like the Sachse would be the best choice. Unfortunately, 75cc models have no battery fitted as standard, so I am trying to work out how to hide a suitable size 6V lithium cell and the regulator etc etc

Ahh, sorry just looked at the manual and the bike has flywheel mag so probably not suitable. Just the same as My Morini Corsaro

Chris,

Check out the Selletra SML systems. Magneto coupled to a 12V alternator, small and compact. Should be a breeze to fit it to a Lav tiddler. Does away with the heavy magneto flywheel, lightweight rotor is only about 50mm dia., unleashing bags of revviness!

Meant for 2-stroke tiddlers, but the Laverdas run with fixed timing as well, so should be quite OK.

Lots of modern 50-100cc scooter systems to be found that could be adapted, most spin the wrong direction though... SML system works in either direction.
