So what would you define as a good sale?
Genuinely interested.
I have had the odd viewing of bikes of mine for sale.
I can honestly say that the initial meetings haven't always gone well.
Occasionally I haven't shined to the viewer ...and there is one purchaser who if we ever meet again I will cut off his testicles, chuffin parasite.
I can't mention his name due to legal reasons.
Well I had the pleasure of a genuine tyre kicker the other day. My first.
I even started putting the bikes away before he stopped talking about himself.
And he didnt realise.
Today was one of those good days.
A real pleasure.
Enjoyed selling the bike to a gent.

Most buyers are great in my experience. If they are looking to make money or are fantasists then they are usually more trouble than they are worth. If the price is right then you will get the right buyer.

Put an old but very good condition CBR1000f (jelly mould) on ebay a couple of weeks ago. Started it at £1000 and the winner bid £1430. I was hoping for a bit more but they don't go for much so I was reasonably happy. Anyway the winner then contacts me saying ' Can I come over to have a look ? ' On arrival he spent 20 mins umming and arring and finally said ' I am going to have to say no '. I explained that is not the way this works. He then bunged me £100 for the inconvenience and scarpered. Before going he said the same thing had happened to him as if that made it better !

I'm afraid the guy who came take a look didnt do his homework. He was only a tyer kicker.
Never understood that turm until this guy came to see the bike.
But wow....he loved the sound of his own voice.
 
Sounds bloody horrendous. I'm hoping i never have to try and sell my bikes - although the little ZZR250 is gathering dust and should be moved on to a young learner. The SFQ could never return its investment dollars and my bikes, while fully sorted, bulletproof and better than the originals, will never be attractive to the rivet counters. Built for me to ride ...
 
Saturday in the motorcycle trade used to be known a “W@nkers day “ - they would turn up unannounced and expect a test ride. My old boss used to tell them the Service Manager would be only too happy to take them for a ride.
“ Scare him Jase!” Would be my instruction.
Favourite customer bullshit - “ Sold my Vincent for a fiver!” & the evergreen “ I had no option but to lay it down..”
and Mr Potless Pratt “ that’s nonsense, I’ve never been turned down for finance in my life, I’ll phone them when I get home” .
My favourite- “ Have you got any RD350s in stock?”
“No, sorry”
“ If you had, how much would it be?”
My old Mate Goddard, a bike dealer for forty years has one review on the internet:
” when I said to Mr Goddard I could get the parts cheaper he told me “ Fuck you, fuck your internet and fuck off!”
Only got one star.
 
I only ever sold 6 bikes in my entire life:
-My GT200 I sold to the girlfriend of a friend of mine
-The RD250 I sold to a friend
-The 750 SF(0) was an experience... I almost asked the buyer not to take it, as it was his first bike ever... I made him aware of what that means for him, he still wanted it. He loved the look, the sound, but just like me, he hated the front brake and the suspension. Sold it on later on...
-a DT 125 Scramble I found in the garage of a house I bought was sold to a friend of mine after making it run and getting it MOT'ed. He is happy still.
-The 1000 SFC Classic - low interest at first due to high price. Then I posted the pic with the SPA peddoc in the back and got a call from a german fellow that fell in love with the look of the bike, always wanted a 1000 SFC and that right away came to me to have a look. He listened carefully to what I told him, I proofed everything I told him on the phone already and at a certain point he said: "You know what - I take it. I can not find a reason to haggle about the price so I won't. All I would like to ask you for is: when I have it registered, I send you the number plate and the papers and you put it on the bike, take a serious tour around and make sure everything is working as it should. Would you do that?" - I did. He is happy till today as far as I know.
-the 1000 SFC #0001 Bike was sold to US. The new owner carefully fixed it but sold it on due to knee problems (could not cope with the seating position...).

I had some tire-kickers on cars though that I sold. Typically I end the conversation relatively soon if it goes the wrong way like: "As it seems you are undecided yet, I suggest you sleep a night over it and if you want it still tomorrow and are willing to pay my price, come back to me and we make the sale."

None returned the next day. But other buyers came that appreciated the car and paid the price. ;-)

as long as you are not under pressure and the value matches the price (even on the high side), you can sell almost anything. If you need to sell though, that is a bad situation, as buyers can almost "smell" it...
 
Sold 2 Hondas. Cheap. Very pleased to get rid of them.
Then a 750 GT Ducati to partially finance the SFC. It needed restoring. The buyer swapped it the same day against a 750 Sport.
My French market Jota that I'd bought new. In need of restoration after a 10 year lay up.
More recently a 250 Scrambler Ducati and a 239 Mk3.
Last year a Laverda 100 Sport.

All sold at the most at "market" price and very often for a lot less. Never had to wait long for a buyer.

I've sold lots and lots of bikes, the only one where the buyers annoyed the hell out of me was my Ducati Monster.
Can you bring it to Taunton (from Portsmouth) so I can have a look?
No I bloody can't.
Oh I suppose I'll have to come down there then.
Please don't bother.
 
A few months back I sold my 96 Mazda MX5 (51,000 miles) perfect nick, a few sensible mods, owned it for 15 years. Listed it on Craigslist and within 2 days had multiple cash offers the first guy that came to see it bought it. He gave me a $1000.00 deposit and promised to be back in 2 days with the remainder, he did return as promised. Over those 2 days had multiple offers willing to pay more than asking? Best sale I ever made, never had a problem with Craigslist I just bought a 2016 E 350 from Craigs, another good experience, much better than FleaBay.
 
Phil Trotter once gave me some good advice - if you want to get a good deal don’t piss the seller off.
Had someone arrange to view a bike once, turned up but didn’t show much interest in the bike - he spent most of the visit boasting how he’d bought exhausts cheaper than a mutual acquaintance, thought I’d be impressed! Not!
