Hi all,
Due to design, i can't/don't want to use the standard air box. I will be using Mikuni carbs. what the best air fiter? K&N look good but do they work, have heard good and bad. The Ramair foam filters also look good in a race track styly. I presume that foam filters out more dirt, but what about the air flow?
Any info and advice would be great. Thank you.

i think the K&N oval pod type are your best bet for something off the shelf
a well made long life filter with very good airflow as long as it isn't overoiled.

generic foam types tend to disintegrate over time

Hi I have some experience of both types, my opinion is the Ram air, flows a lot more that the KN filters.

The surface area "looks" greater, they are considerably longer and of course they're not capped at the end in the airstream ! My jota came with KN's but they were worn out, I've only ever run ram airs on Mikuni's however the long ones I have do foul the std side panels on the RHS.
The side panel pushes a kink into the filter and I have a before and after result on the dyno of side panels fitted and removed, alarming !!

I agree with Scott about deterioration, they do break down but mostly where they rub against something like your leg. I just buy a new one every couple of years or swap them around.

Mark,
If you are looking at the RS Mikuni carbs then you will find a clearance problem with the right hand side cover with the oval K&N pods.
You can get the DNA Pod filters as made in Aussie and they fit/clear a lot better due to their different shape, still touch the side panel but only just.
Foam pods would be even better.

Left hand side panel does not have any issues.
But, if you are planning on not using the standard frame and side panels then don't worry about what you run.

Red, Won't be using side panels but standard frame, performance is more important with this item than looks.

Rob. do you use the round or oval on your bike, also what is the neck diameter of the miks, i'm in the strange position of having to buy the filters before the carbs.  Cheers.

Hi Mark

The Ramair filter I use is marketed over here by Raid or was, seems to shift round in the UK Pt MR-015 and it is the round one, no harm in using an Oval one if its bigger then great.
Dimension off packet is 55 x 78 x 117mm but I dont guarantee that is the dim you want, safer to check part number against their web site..
Without Sidepanels there is no conflict except a little contact on the middle one against spine but negligible.
