Alternator charging indicator

I went for green numbers.  It will be in just the right place for me to peer over the top of my glasses - I can't see much of the information at the bottom of my GPS's screen cos I don't have varifocals...

I ordered the dash top unit- set it to alternate time/temp/volts should be OK and it will look pretty good on the RGS.  Don't want to get it wet, but unlikely under the screen there as long as I'm careful washing it.

So you'll alternate between being too late, freezing your nuts off and your bike's eletrickery going tits up. Sounds promising. :D

Yeah, I may have to just concentrate on the voltage- I came back from Chester with a mate on Sunday who has a GS equipped with an air temp guage, and he was all too happy to tell me how cold it was getting and me with only seven hours of riding to go...

Here's what I did

Temporarily wired in to my DIN socket and only blutac-ed on at the mo', but I think it looks pretty neat.  Flips between time temp and volts but can be set to show one or the other continuosly. No idea how long it will last, but then that goes for just about everything in these days of Chinese made crap.

Hey Reggie kind of looks OK, seems your bench is as messy as mine..
Now what are you sayng about Chinese made goods huh but then again you wont get an argument out of me though I must admit if they would get some damn quality control then who knows... actually you would be amazed what is made is China these days ????

Talk to John IIS about crappy components.  :o I think this thing will be good and neat once it's stuck down properly.

How about something like this?

Yeah, looked at a few like that.  If it lasts then I think the one I have integrates reasonably well with the dash/fairing, also quite like having the time come up.  I can set it to show on my GPS, but I'd need varifocals to read it ::)

Put something like an in line 30 AMP Smith or Stewart Warner 2 inch Automotive Ampere Gauge  between the all circuits except for the Starter Motor.

Well, as we know, it wouldn't have been by choice.  You do wonder what the aerospace industry does for its bits and pieces.

My indicators flash super-quick when I'm revving the bike fairly hard, is that a sign of something which might fry my fairly new Odyssey battery?

Funnily enough, I think the over charging damaged my flasher unit- one side flashes quickly, the other normal.

Get a volt meter on the battery and rev the bike to 3000 or so - should be less than 14.5 v or so.  Mine was 17 or 18v when the reg/rec went south.

The flasher unit has only one circuit that powers both sides, shouldn't be any difference.  Check the indicator bulbs and the grounds...

Yeah, on my list of things to do.  First thought I had a bulb out - makes it flash faster -  but both working.  A job for winter time.

Hey Reggie

Unless you have a very strange aftermarket flasher unit, a dead bulb will make the remaining one flash slower, or not at all (lamps stay on). A fast flash means it's drawing too much current. Have you had any blown fuses?

You could have the wrong sized globe, or possibly a spurious path to earth somewhere. Maybe a wire has rubbed through its insulation, or you're getting contact with another circuit, like brake light or headlight. Do any other lights flash when you put the indicator on?

No blown fuses.  It has always flashed faster (both sides) when one of the bulbs is disconnected- that's how I'm reminded I haven't reconnected the front ones when I've had the fairing off :D

Globes haven't been changed.  Think it might be an electronic flasher unit (can't remember), certainly not the one that came with the bike

Anyway, have to do some tidying up, there are too many extra wires connected to the battery (socket, headlight direct feed, heated grips) and I'll be adding another when I fit the power feed for the GPS so I have to tidy it up.  Only a few days to go before the clocks go back so that'll be it for the Laverda for this year.
