This comes up on a semi-regular basis.
The perforated plate fits in the front slot because that's the direction road debris and cooling air will be coming from, unless you're fond of reversing at high speed.
Also, since the alternator rotor runs clockwise, gravity would cause any ingested objects to be dragged into the gap between rotor and case, not ideal.
The rear slot/exhaust, on the other hand, would tend to eject any object that would be extremely unlikely to get in there.

It overshoots the cases East and West, is folded to clip behind North and South.

Now fitted and more importantly oil leak cured, seems really that cover needs tightening before fixixing the M27 nut behind the alternator
