Alternator

Would my Series 1 180 No722* have a 180w alternator? And would this still give a crap output on tickover?
I?m not getting much out of it on tickover and it?s difficult to give the throttle a blip without dropping the multimeter leads.

No. Max output was quoted at 150w for the last of the Bosch alternator models.  I suggest that was measured downhill with a following wind!
You won't get any measurable DC voltage output at tickover - the battery holds volts up until alternator output increases to begin charging.  Blipping ain't really going to do much either. Rev it to 3,000+rpm for 20 secs - you should see volts slowly rise to 14.2 (ish) and stabilise if all is well

I find these alligator clip test leads very useful to free up hands when testing various electrical components. Available for a few bucks on ebay.

Incidentally, we don't have alligators in Australia so I call them crocodile clips  ;)

I was using my multimeter with similar looking leads one day, Cam, and wasn't getting the result I expected - turned out there was NO actual inner wire connecting with the croc clips - and never had been! In fact the plastic insulation might have been empty!
