Amal 1037 and1036 carbs choke?

I did hear once a stupid comment about engines getting addicted to it (ether spray like Aerostart)

I had someone tell me the same thing when the diesel engine in my boat was getting difficult to start. He told me not to use Aerostart or it'll get addicted to the stuff. It just confirmed my opinion that his internal light bulb was a bit dim.

I suppose people form that idea because when an engine is worn out to the state that it needs help starting, it's not going to magically get better by itself and stop needing ether to start it. So, once you resort to ether spray, it'll continue to need the starting juice until it's reconditioned.

In the case of my boat, it just needed a head recon job. It was losing compression through knackered valves/seats. Now it's fixed, it starts normally without ether.

Yep, Concentrics must be one of the simplest carb designs on the planet, absolutely no rocket surgery going on there. Hammering the tickler is just a vain attempt at puncturing the float.

Original Laverda1036/37 especially for early SFCs are rare, these carbs were mainly fitted to 2-strokes, are the needle jets correct for 4-stroke application? Shouldn't have much effect on starting, but might have a large influence on rev pick-up.

I've found that 2-stroke Amal's have a cut out round the needle jet.. the brass bit that stays in the Carb, when you strip it. or it is on 900 series carbs.
Watch you don't loose the needle clip on a 1000 series, they use to be very hard to replace.
Its a long time since ive played with my 1034 but if its any thing like the 900 series there can be a brass pilot jet internally pressed in. ( not the pilot jet thats in the float bowl.) its down behind the air screw on the other side of the carb.. pig to clean. I have used a 010" guitar string in the past to clear it.

My last XT 500 was an absolute bastard to start, so I fitted a high-tech precious metal spark plug, and surprisingly that didn't help. It might have needed a complete rebuild first.
