I knew I should have left that trusty old 630 o-ring chain on the ('78) Mirage well alone... ::)

After fitting a 530 chain/sprocket conversion I seem to have lost 1st and 5th.. 1st occasionally goes in but tends to pop out..  Is this simply a matter of lining up the cover a little better or are deeper issued implied? :o :o

TIA

That scares me, early on that happened to me and I didnt have 5th gear for a few months. If you put it back together right its usually a binding cover, that ended up being my fix. Lean the bike over so you don't lose oil and loosen the cover. Work the gears while moving the rear wheel and nipping the cover-up. Good luck, mine has been fine for the last bunch of times this was done but I still get nervous. Don't drop the bike doing this, easy to do.

Cheers Vince: am also wondering if I refitted the selector drum (with the 4 pons) in the right position..

I attempted to do mine about 3 weeks ago, the time before the front sprocket was that loose we decided to use a Loctite product to take up the slack in the splines. This last time the sprocket was that tight it went on a tiny amount and no more. I had heard banging hard on them on was NOT good so the bike went up the food chain to a lots smarter Mechanic. He went at the spline with some kind of file to tidy it and then heated the sprocket and lightly tapped it on. It took some heat to achieve its final spot. So maybe there is some variation in sprocket fit. Bought some wheel bearing to hopefully take out some wheel play and I need to do some relieving cuts to the front end of the chain guard where it's hitting a frame member and then looking at the rear shocks and an issue I have with them. It always snowballs this stuff.

That selector drum has a notch cut in its side and that notch needs to be at the midpoint horizontal.

No excessive use of hammers: tapped on quite easily using the back of a heavy screw driver. Splines aren?t as good as they could be but passable

Thanks Vince: will check that tomorrow: have to admit I just threw it back in and positioned it so the pawls were hooking onto something.. ::)

That's horizontal and at the rear of the selector drum, there is an internal mark as well I think that also lines up at the same time. Its all in the green book

If the other gears can be selected, everything will be lined up as it should.  1st. and 5th. causing problems is likely to be a binding sprocket cover and/or excenter adjustment.

Yep that's wear my money is, you should never fully tighten the cover until you confirm that you all the gears. Once you have the cover in the correct spot,  as can bind on the shaft then tighten to about 88 inch pounds, 8 foot lbs or 10 Newton meters depending on how you roll.

Please remember don't over tighten or you'll then be looking for some time serts me thinks  :P
