Is it possible to replace the little gearbox return spring (same spring as on an RGS I think) without removing the clutch? I have the old broken spring off.
I'm having difficulty getting the clutch centre nut off - is it a left hand thread?
Can you describe how you did this - I can get one end of the spring home but because the ends of the spring are bent over to locate them on the arm I can't get the second one home.
...some progress in that I have managed to hook the spring over the arm rather than through the locating hole. It puts the spring under more load but aside from this seems okay. Is this 'good enough'?
Do it right the first time. The clutch basket nut has left hand threads. The thin spacer between the basket halves can be a PITA to get off, other than that there shouldn't be any surprises. While the clutch basket is off check that the cush drive rubbers are OK. Just about all of them I've run across have shrunk and hardened over the years allowing slop with the primary gear. Leaving the spring as is might be an OK temp fix but with the added tension the spring will likely expire again.
I slowed down a bit and managed to fit the spring correctly.
Didn't go any further as encountering another PITA doesn't fit in with my schedule which is already in tatters...
Useful to know that the spring can be replaced without removing the clutch and that the nut is left hand thread - I will pack the tools and a spare for the forthcoming trip to France.
