attack from the Jota

Lockout stuff was not deployed.

That's nuts. Who would be dumb enough to climb into a mincing machine without it being locked out? That bloke would be a certainty for a Darwin Award.

While on the subject of stupidity, Lothar's friend who used his finger to grease a moving motorcycle chain deserves a dickhead award too.
Way back before O-ring chains were available, I'd sometimes grease my chain with an old toothbrush while the engine was idling in first gear. Getting the heads bitten off a couple of toothbrushes was a clear indication that it wasn't a good place for fingers. I suppose some people need to be told not to put their fingers into rotating machinery

One of the dumbest things I did recently (a few years ago) was take the guard off the cutting disk of a 4" angle grinder to get it into a difficult spot. I knew it was risky but did it anyway. I still have the scar across two fingers to remind me not to do that again.

Darwin Awards usually are posthumous. They're awarded to idiots who remove themselves from the gene pool by acts of stupidity, thereby improving the average intelligence of those remaining. There have been cases of people removing themselves from the gene pool by non-fatal methods (ie: terminating their ability to reproduce) but they're pretty rare.

Its surprising how common that cutout thing is, and Uncle of mine by marriage, not part of my Gene pool thankfully, got his first house using that method. The compo after the event was the deposit. I would have preferred not so much damage to my feet.

Here's an example of a rare Darwin Award to a living recipient. Some of the comments are funny.

27 Nov 2018, Arizona. The Buckeye Police Department reports that a man accidentally shot his own sausage while shopping in the meat aisle at Walmart. Arizona law does not require a permit (nor a holster for that matter) to carry a firearm, so our hero felt free to carry his piece "commando-style" (unholstered) beneath his waistband. When the unholstered gun drifted down into his jeans, he reached in and pulled the trigger while repositioning his weapon. This loose cannon's low hanging fruit didn’t have a chance. Firearm supporters can add this event to the arsenal of ammunition against gun control. Guns really do make a difference.
Darwin Award? Odds are, our gun nut (pun intended) shredded his ability to breed and wins the uncommon Living Darwin Award: still alive but unable to reproduce. Otherwise, his reward is an Honorable Mention -- "better luck next time." We await further information.

Reader Puns
"His gun was named 'Lorena'." -P.Lines
"So he went off half-cocked?" -J.Petry
"Fresh sausage half off!" -P.Hall
"The guy is now a gun nut without nuts. Hopefully he'll come to enjoy the catheter." -G.Ely
"After this he will be definitely shooting blanks." -I.Titi
"His barrel was shortened that day." -A.Yuan
"Friends call him 'snubnose' now."
"He's not half the man he used to be." -D.Webb
"Clean up on Aisle 4." -M.Miller

The Darwin Award lists prove that stupidity knows no boundaries.

At least I still live and can tell/warn about rotating machinery! ;)

Just doing a routine valve clearance check on my 80 Jota and had the alternator cover off so I could turn the engine over.
Finished the job and started the engine still with the alternator cover off when my trousers got caught on the spinning crank at idle speed they wound onto the crank then the crank started to dig a hole into my ley and as the trousers were now wound onto the shaft so tightly the engine stalled.
Must have been a sight blood oozing out of my leg whil I am now solidly attached to the bike.
I had to get a screwdriver that was resting on the seat and attempt to cut my trousers off with the screwdriver, bloody hell no more tuning after a long day at work!!
Hope all is okay! That's a serious situation-your pulse was probably faster than the triple's-

I was out shooting about 30 years ago when a female in the party shot her own foot, she was climbing a gate and any of the following would have prevented her serious injury
safety on
slugs out
barrels broken
no finger on trigger
not pointed at foot, or any other vulnerable object,
but the main rule is, when climbing over a gate. break the barrels and pass the gun to someone who is already over, (or the next to cross) if on your own, pass the gun (open) under the gate and leave on the ground, or rest it (open) on the gate/hedge.
CLEM

I knew a guy once, when out shooting had to climb up a short vertical bank, he leaned the gun against the bank and climbed up. Stuck his finger in the barrel to retrieve the gun. Of course we all know what happened. Luckily he only blew off his index finger. Someone asked how he managed to blow his fucking finger off, his reply - "wasn't that one, it was the one next to it".

I bloke I worked with, a bit of a fuckwit actually cut the end of this right index finger off using a very big Audenorph Table Saw. You might think no big deal till you try holding a pen or use a cordless drill. The fuckwit bit came from him constantly giving me shit before his accident about me being scared of THAT saw. Fucken oath I was Scared of it. I used it a lot But I still have all my fingers. I saw what the old wood machinists hands or at least what was left of them looked like when I was an Apprentice

Carpenter friend of mine boasted that he still had all fingers at the age of 35... 2 weeks later he lost 3 of them to a table saw. Routine/general carelessness got the better of him.

I sacrificed my left index fingertip to the Laverda gods, bloody 750 starter freewheel snapped back when the engine stalled. Possibly the single most stupid thing I've ever done.

How did your finger come to be involved in that incident, Piet? How do you get them near a running engine? Between starter chain and sprocket is all I can imagine.
Had a nasty near miss when I was working on a guy's SF - had my fingers on the oil pump driven gear when he turned the rear wheel (was in gear to time the gears properly). My index finger went into the mesh, lots of blood. Another very close one was helping my boss press a crank, hydraulic 3-phase - felt my middle finger come in contact with the upper web and the bed and screamed - he let go of the lever and it stopped just in time ... left an imprint in the bone! Faint-worthy.

Maybe it kicked back through the starter button. :)

Re gun incidents. A friend of mine (Bill) was killed in 1974 when he accidently shot himself in the head with a .22 rifle. I wasn't there so I don't know exactly how he managed it. I was told that he was shooting from the back of a ute (pickup truck) while on a rabbit hunting mission. All I know is that Bill's gun discharged and his mates found him lying dead in the tray of the ute with a gunshot wound to the head. He wasn't an idiot so wouldn't have been pointing a loaded and cocked gun at himself. My guess is that he dropped the rifle and it landed butt first with the barrel pointing at his head.
